Just wondering in what ways do designers here generate freelance work? Are there any websites or sources you use that you've found work well to find work?
My own freelance work comes through referrals primarily, but really wondering if anyone recommends any sites in particular (like Krop, OnSite, etc..) to find work.
Thanks :)

upwork, freelancer.com
- aren't these sites over saturated with people from other countries charging way less.pinkfloyd
- This. Ive used them to hire when i get busy or can't figure some shit out. So cheap.ArmandoEstrada

referrals, instagram, linkedin, making friends with good recruiters/talent agencies, &c

For me it's all referrals or existing contacts. Some freelancers hit the marketing really hard to get a consistent funnel of leads. I don't know how to do that ;)

Make good work, have lots of friends, do social media and the work will come to you.

for me its people who heard i quit my job. 3 weeks in and i have too much work too handle. i haven't reached out to my A list ppl and already telling people sorry im full up for at least 3 months. at this rate i'm thinking i'll never have to create a facebook account and give like handjobs. maybe its simply a feast cycle, but dammit i was really hoping for more time for my own shit and time to get setup. first world problems

Working Not Working always has some okay stuff - you have to get approved I believe - so, have a portfolio to show.
They have search options with FREELANCE and FULLTIME and some of the FL stuff is remote which is cool if you're not in the city they advertise from....
Also B E H A N C E has a job section that sometimes works...
Lastly - headhunters - if you're in LA or NYC, you can get a lot of work, just be cautious of the fees they take - some are really crazy rip-off artists...

Upwork is charging more on both sides - client and contractor. I find that pretty disturbing considering they make $10 on every hour I work... so in the past year they made some ten grand off of me alone. I wonder what the problem is...
I find Upwork to be a great supplement to my income. And, when everything is in place I am able to turn down work and find projects that will enhance my portfolio... rather than only taking work to pay bills.

Happy Monday all. Bumping this thread.
I have no problem finding work, but it's time to diversify, Upwork is charging even more. Any online sites you've been using to find gigs in your region and/or specialty?
I have a feeling if I put more energy into Linkedin it will pay off. Can anyone confirm?
- Spend about 10 minutes every couple days networking on LinkedIn and you’ll certainly find work... it’s pretty easy to game the LI algorithmnb
- It’s not optimized for freelance, so do this: look under “Jobs” for anywhere hiring a full time role that you could theoretically fill if you had time....nb
- ...then message the head/VP/director of design and tell them you’re open to freelance work and send your portfolio.nb
- Nearly 100% of agencies that are hiring are short-staffed, at least in the states.nb
- Thanks for your advice nb... I also remember they had some kind of Preferred Freelancer network at some point, not sure if still in the works or an experimentcanoe
- I use Toptal, has a pretty rigorous onboarding process, but I've enjoyed it quite a bit. Also, usebraintrust.com looks good too.mathinc

just signed up to upwork.com
anyone got any tips?
- Don't bother?grafician

- yeah rob them for the free perks you can get (they used to have options to give you a credit card what isn't tied to upwork), and sign up to freelancer[dot]com.sted
- set up a profile what best fits your shit, sign up min to the plus plan monthly (they charg you less). start looking for projects. don't:sted
- don't agree with any work up front (test etc.), its an escrow system people put down the money before accepting you as candidate.sted
- don't even look at projects where the employer is: india, pakistan, without verified ID and/or payment, shitty reviews, lots of open projects.sted
- *sidenote: verify your payment method once and remove that card later after the first withdrawal. **they can give you a payoneer card with a bank account.sted
- you bid on projects, project owner starts talking to you, you both agree on the terms, you won a project. freelancer takes the project fee up front from you butsted
- that isn't a big deal since even if the project fails you get that money back, or gets paid from the project budget. (your account balance can go negative! :)sted
- so you in the project what you can separated to milestones what will be paid once those are accepted by the employer. 5% goes to freelancer butsted
- this small fee is a really small price for what you can do with this system, like cut some expenses :)sted
- after a project is finished you get the money for the last milestone and that's it. write feedbacks, show up the project to get more work.sted
- like@upwork you aren't allowed to move the employer to an other platform or place for communication but that's mostly about covering your own asssted
- when something goes sideways. they support is a bit hard to deal with but they really get shit done.sted
- sweet thanks sted!YakuZoku
