create symbol for cast iron

Hey all!
Been a long time since I have been on here! I have been tasked with making a set of symbols for a new drill press we are creating at the company I work for. They want a symbol for cast iron and I am scratching my head at what could represent that. Since it is a material that can be shaped into anything - I don't think a symbol is going to represent cast iron in any meaningful way (without the text next to it).
Thoughts?

If you're designing icons that communicate the material that's being worked with rather than the action being taken....what other materials can be used with the drill press? How are you communicating steel for example...or other metals?

Hi See thru,
Thanks for responding. Cast Iron is to represent the materials that the drill press is made of. Since cast iron is good for absorbing vibration it makes it a very sturdy material to build the drill press out of. It's a large standing drill press. So even though it is capable of drilling lots of materials like glass, plastics wood and metals - that is not what the cast iron is representing.- Maybe consider explaining the benefit instead of the material? an icon that illustrates low vibrations rather than cast iron.zarkonite

I'd save myself the time and just add what you just wrote to the bottom of the drills description.
It strikes me that as a potential customer, I'd want to see a list of stuff I can drill rather than see 1 icon that's not going to be immediately useful.

Hi again See thru
It will be a series of icons. I agree with you. I think taking the time to create a meaningful icon for cast iron is a waste of time and effort when it can just be written out. Unfortunately, not up to me. My boss has made a bunch of sketches and this is what she wants. I appreciate the feedback.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This is an interesting challenge, and one I've come across many times in similar situations. Since there is no universal symbol people recognize for different types and qualities of metals, you can feel free to be abstract. There definitely will have to be descriptive text to go along with them anyway, since the icons alone won't communicate.
For this ask, I would explore geometric groupings. For example: a tight cluster of small circles for cast iron; tight group of parallel lines for steel; wavy lines for heat treatment; slanted lines for sharp.

Did a quick google search and canons are cast iron. You can make a cool hipster icon with text using an old canon. Durable, strong heavy as Fuck, easily recognizable
