Has anyone come across a good alternative to Issuu? Something a bit more creative than a digital flip version of a PDF? Or is Issuu still the best solution out there?
My client wants a lovely looking and engaging online magazine that can be easily updated as required.
Thanks!

I've used variations of:
PageFlip
https://pageflip-books.com&
TurnJS
http://www.turnjs.com/Using those and Advanced Custom Fields, you can create a more customized presentation on front-end and back-end for your client.
Issuu is pretty fool proof, though AND as far as i'm aware is still the industry standard for "online pdf's". It's come a long way BUT unless you pay a bit monthly, it's customization is minimal.
Godspeed CuriousGeorge! Update the thread if/when you find any new information brother.

its pricing/licencing is not transparent enough and still very confusing! can you tell people how much they pay when using the standard version 4api

Been using it for the only version of a client's magazine, works really well.
I have our designer lay out the print version in INDD and after we get final client approval we have him make the online version in it. Based on his billable hours and lack of complaining I think it works well =)

by the way, we also have an issuu account and basic plan and it worked well. then out of the blue, they forced users to change the plan and pay more if they want to keep the embed feature.
issu: "Starting June 17, 2019, you will need to upgrade your plan to continue to embed your content on your website or blog and share your content embeds across your favorite social platforms."
we switched to a one time payment license from a different provider and saved a lot and we are more flexible now by hosting our own pdf books. also when the provider is gone the books stay save online cause its on our own server.
but there is also a downside, it takes a bit more afford at the beginning and if you are a publisher for magazines you miss maybe the ecosystem with other cloud publishers.
