Are experts are back in fashion yet?
- Any new virus causes panic because of the unknowns and the potential it has to kill lots of people.monoboy
- It's highly infectious. Death rate is low(ish). It badly affects the elderly and those with morbidities.monoboy
- All those that attended CPAC should self immolate for at least two weeks to be sure.monoboy

I’ve always had trouble envisioning a real-world example of the Butterfly Effect until now. Some fucker eats a bat — or some shit — and the world economy goes into collapse with the potential of 10’s of millions dead.
- The formation of life and planets over trillions of years is mind-blowing enough in itself.monoboy
- Tru datGnash
- Well, it may have come out of a lab, not a meat market.NBQ00
- Haven't you heard of Gangnam Style? One man did a dance, it spread like virus crazy.shapesalad
- Korean economy had a massive boost because of it. Butterfly Effects can be positive as well as negative.shapesalad
- It the house of cards effectTurboslacker
- Except nobody got the flu from eating bat.pango
- be it a bat, civet, pangolin, cat, wolf puppy, rat or some other ‘exotic meat’ (if you want sugar coat it), the source of the last 3 pandemics are clearGnash
- ya china needs to ban consumption on exotic animals. not sure if that's sugar coating. it correctly includes all carrier of original virus.pango
- it was actually banned several times but the rich chinese lobbied the ban to be lifted.pango

What are the odds, we have a TV series over here called 'Epidemic' .. it started in January and the virus in the series is a Coronavirus... a really bad one, high rate of mortality.
Its a total coincidence that this show is on air at the same time as the COVID-19 ... the series has been filmed last year...
Its nothing to help the paranoia over here.
- everything is stagedpablo28
- See above. Not paranoid. Unless you want to explain that to the heads of every major tech company, sports team, event coordinator and politician in this city.garbage
- It's not paranoia at all. Today there will probably be a ban on events with over 250 people. Nobody shrugs off money like that unless you have legit concerns.garbage
- Virology 101: Don't let it get a foothold, or it will stick around. We have the common flu because we didn't stomp it to death like a spider in the bathroom.garbage
- lol dont know why you guys are downvoting thisBennn
- because the odds are obviously 100%, you're simply pointing out what's happening, I suppose?monospaced

Since it's public knowledge now:

So yeah, TP jokes and all, but please stop the Bennsplaining about "eh it's just the flu" unless you live in an epicenter and realize that this is serious.
We're more worried about not having testing kits, our homeless population becoming a swamp for novel mutations, etc. There's rumor that we actually might get a mandatory quarantine in the coming weeks.
- i never said 'its just the flu'Bennn
- Don't worry, just some random bennnbashing...gonzalle
- You've been flippant about it. It's a meme that fits.garbage
- I might have misfired there, but I'm shooting down anything I see with "paranoia" in it, because there's been a whole lot of flu and TP jokes.garbage
- But apologies if I misspoke.garbage
- apologies accepted, internet friend :)Bennn
- He didn't say it was just the flu he did said it was the media.deadsperm
- just to be clear here ... testing kits don't help the situation ... in fact, lining up to get a test is guaranteed to spread itmonospaced
- if you're symptomatic, treat the fucking symptoms, stay home and rest. There is NO CURE besides that.monospaced
- I dunno about that, the countries that are solving it seem to be testing everyone.yuekit
- If you don't test anyone you can't hope to stop the virus. Which means it will be able to spread everywhere and suddenly you'll have a disaster on your hands.yuekit
- I respectfully disagree. The test is not required for treatment. Treatment is rest and fluids, like any flu virus.monospaced
- If everyone who was sick took care of themselves and didn't spread it, it would be solved even quicker.monospaced
- The test is not required for treatment, but it lets you know who is infected so that they can be isolated and their contacts as well.yuekit
- Explain to me how the spread of the virus ever gets stopped if you don't test anyone.yuekit
- The symptoms ALONE "let you know who is infected so that they can be isolated and their contacts as well." It's really that simple.monospaced
- If you're sick, then you probably should consider yourself infected. I don't see how going to a hospital/DR and being around more sick people is a good thing.monospaced
- My father is an ER doctor, his father is a doctor, I have 4 uncles and 2 aunts who are drs, a brother is an immunologist, and my wife works in a hospital.monospaced
- They all think it's fucking STUPID AF that people insist on a test instead of staying home.monospaced
- Mono, you've just been kind of wrong on this consistently, I think you said your wife was a nurse? I'm getting info from a more administrative level.garbage
- Mono is right, don't go outside if you have symptoms. Human contact is how it spreads!zarkonite
- They're wasting time testing people who should be home instead of treating peoiple who need help.monospaced
- North Korea is doing drive through testing station. Minimal physical contact I suppose.pango
- So no, a test alone does nothing. Getting more people tested only confirms numbers, but it isn't helpful in treatment.monospaced
- I never said my wife was a nurse. And I wouldn't be inconsistent because i'm not lying, garbage.monospaced
- ^ I think you meant South Korea hahayuekit
- I'm getting info from the FRONT LINES of doctors treating actual victims in NYC. Are you?monospaced
- Finally a second person who thinks it's not funny to make those jokes anymore.pango
- The legit concern from higher up was that Seattle is not going to be able to accurately diagnose and quickly quarantine an outbreak.garbage
- a lack of testing kits is not a real issue, because they do NOTHING besides confirm what is usually painfully obviousmonospaced
- Yeah but aren't people able to spread the virus without symptoms? I think I read it takes five days on average for any symptoms to show up.yuekit
- And it's not "just like any flu virus". A virus eventually learns to not kill the host, but it will mutate further and then another outbreak starts.garbage
- And many never get sick but still act as carriers.yuekit
- Yes, of course, yuekit. Just like the flu. So it's best to stay in, avoid contact, and AVOID the doctor's office which is crawling with infected people.monospaced
- garbage, it's exactly like the flu when it comes to symptoms and treatment, AND mutationmonospaced
- It's best for who to stay in though, everyone? Since we just pointed out that no one knows who is infected without testing.yuekit
- And months back we knew Seattle was the perfect petri dish for a US spread. Not just a flu, and because it wasn't caught and squashed, get ready for COVID-20.garbage
- It's best for anyone who has symptoms to stay in, and everyone else to be precautious. It's not that complicated, and I'm still not sure why it's hard to grasp.monospaced
- If you're not showing symptoms, don't go get a test, becuase you're just going to expose yourself almost guaranteed.monospaced
- Or COVID-21. Because the weather is warming up, but there's a thing called "viral latency". Next fall will be a shitstorm.garbage
- or ... or ... people will be cautious and stop the spread and it will be okaymonospaced
- It seems like China and Korea got the situation under control, largely through mass testing of everyone.yuekit
- So I'm not sure how that fits with the idea that testing can't work or is just going to make more people sick. Clearly there is a way to make it work.yuekit
- oops ya i meant south koreapango
- yuekit: IF they have it under control it's by locking everyone down. Have you not read about all the drastic lockdown measures?zarkonite
- Yes I've been following it very closely from the start. Every country that has been successful has done both, mass testing combined with lockdowns andyuekit
- isolating infected people.yuekit
- self isolation because of symptoms was how things were handled, and that's because people listened to doctors who told them to do it.monospaced
- I understand your friends said that, it just seems contradictory to what I've read elsewhere. Even the governor of New York is saying they need more testing.yuekit

Trudeau announces $1B fund to respond to COVID-19
https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics…
"Federal government will waive 1-week wait for employment insurance, fund research"
Bearded Trudeau for the win!
- $1B !!!!! Holy shit!Bennn
- This is too much. Where's the money for the flu??yuekit
- surely it should be $999million Bennn!?fadein11
- A lot of money wasting on useless stuff incoming. I hope all this budget will be tightly managedBennn
- @bennn, I like you a lot, you are a nice guy but you said you had watched that Jo Rogan episode? that's the 3rd expert I have seen talk at length that noone isfadein11
- A lot of people don't understand maths. $1b ÷ 7342 = only $136202.67shapesalad
- exaggerating the seriousness of this. It's pretty terrifying.fadein11
- @fadein No iam Ok with the amount of money, its a lot, the COVID-19 is serious, i just hope the money will be well managedBennn
- i work in a Gov institution, i know how Gov money can be wasted easily...Bennn
- oh yes Bennn, us Brits are v.aware of that also.fadein11
- $1bil with government workers involved is nothing! IE: 20% of that goes directly to pay their pension funds... if not more.zarkonite
- Lol do you think emergency covid funding will be earmarked for pensions?nb
- they are probably talking bailing out corporations and industries.uan
- nb all government workers pays include pension benefits. If they're working under that budget, whatever is spend on "salaries" goes to pensions as well.zarkonite
- it's one of the many many problems with letting government run shit. You end up with dishwashers in hospitals with huge benefits and it costs too much.zarkonite
- Who would you prefer addresses the Coronavirus, then, if not the govt? Costco? TD Bank? Canadian Tire?nb
- Supervision = Government.
Planning = Expert panel.
Execution = Private contractors.zarkonite
