Trump Rejects New York’s Plea For Ventilators: ‘I Don’t Believe You Need’ That Many
“I have a feeling that a lot of the numbers that are being said in some areas are just bigger than they’re going to be,” Trump told Fox News’ Sean Hannity on Thursday night. “I don’t believe you need 40,000 or 30,000 ventilators. You know, you go into major hospitals sometimes, they’ll have two ventilators. And now all of a sudden they’re saying can we order 30,000 ventilators?” - Trump

I really hope that Elon Musk, Ford, etc...can follow the lead of Dyson.
James Dyson designed a new ventilator in 10 days. He's making 15,000 for the pandemic fight.
- These guys designed the ventilator, Dyson are designing the delivery system... https://www.ttp.com/…

Just been reading about workers on container ships being subject to a global ban on shore leave, so even if a port allows the ship to stay after docking, they're trapped on board.
Otherwise they're sent back out to sea. If they have internet access at all it's usually super-slow, strictly monitored satellite variety. Some have been on-ship for 10 months. Grim.
Can't be too long before people lock-down, if nothing else, starts to have an impact on global trade? Unless they just keep the same people trapped indefinitely.
- *trapped on the ships, so that they have a workforce and can continue to operate.Fax_Benson

Some good news, we already got a vaccine here in Romania - testing it next on human cells in the lab, then tests on volunteers in a month or so - if successful and safe, will go into production soon after.
https://oncogen.ro/oncogen-vacci…
paper: https://www.preprints.org/manusc…
our scientists are making the design and specifics "open source" so everybody can benefit from it (not like other labs are doing, delaying the testing so they can patent it and profit later).
so yeah, no need for 18 moths of lockdown
p.s. btw Romanians invented both insulin and a cure for tuberculosis after WWI so we're pretty sure this vaccine could work and we can stop this madness soon enough
- Go Romania!utopian
- That's great, but I wonder how long until any vaccine is realistically available due to the time needed for testing.yuekit
- There is also a trial beginning in Seattle.
https://www.bbc.com/…yuekit - Fantastic. Black sea here I come!srhadden
- Tests on volunteers, 3 phases: 10 100 1000 people, should be safe already, this is just "tagging" proteins so that the immune system can destroy the virusgrafician
- i beliefe they need to wait some time in phase 3 to see how effective it is, how long it stays active. probably up to 6-12 months..uan
- good news but there's many of these stories, unfortunately many drugs may work at dev stage but fail in human trails.shapesalad

Man planning to bomb Missouri hospital killed, FBI says
A man suspected of planning to attack a hospital treating coronavirus cases in the US state of Missouri died after a shootout with the FBI, officials say.
The confrontation happened as agents tried to arrest the 36-year-old in the city of Belton as part of a domestic terrorism investigation, the FBI said.
Officials said the man was motivated by racist and anti-government beliefs.

Is Brexit still going to happen this year with all this going on? Seems unrealistic but I haven't seen much discussion of this.
- No, but they won't say so officially - worried the country can't cope with further disappointments.Fax_Benson
- I'm sure when Boris is tended to by an EU nurse working within the NHS, things will go really well with the negotiations.shapesalad

UF Health workers devise way to reuse hospital materials, otherwise discarded.
The innovative mask uses Halyard H600 two-ply spun polypropylene that cannot be penetrated by water, bacteria or particles. It blocks 99.9% of particulates, making the masks about 4% more effective at blocking particulate material than the N95 masks, according to Bruce Spiess, M.D., a professor of anesthesiology in the UF College of Medicine, who made that calculation based on the manufacturer’s specifications.
The Halyard material, which comes in 4-by-4-foot sheets, is typically discarded after surgical instrument trays are unwrapped and before coming into contact with patients. About 10 masks can be made from one sheet, and an estimated 500 to 1,000 sheets are likely available from UF Health hospitals every day, according to Spiess.

Some good news for a change.
Just of a Zoom chat with a programmer who works on 3d organ scanning software. His whole team have been working on changing what they do to scan the lungs as some early tests have shown it can show Covid 19 even in people who don't appear ill.
It seems more accurate than the current tests too he was saying.I only know the guy from painting, quite mad his day job is doing really complex geekery way above my head. His team are working round the clock to get it going.
- We barely have any tests, never mind 3d Scanning gear! But obviously I'm being a cunt... this sounds amazing.Ianbolton
- didn‘t the doctor in the nyt video say they saw covid in lungs of a patient in a CT scan. what planet needs is a reliable cheap test.uan
- It was going on that info Uan that made them change their work. The software they use creates a live scan. Sounds like something out of Total Recall.PhanLo
