- i want everyone to know that I would downvote Bennn's note if I could.imbecile
- Having lived through the 90s it felt like that they were going to be THE band that made it into history... and then Bono's ego went wild.zarkonite

On the day of the death of Diana Princess of Wales, BBC Radio 1 played their instrumental, "The Last Stand" (an extended instrumental version of "One Night Stand"), every thirty minutes for several hours.
- man, i was thinking about this just a few days ago - i woke up to the news and R1 switching to the playlist. all those tunes give me the shivers...kingsteven
- would have been 16 at the time, often waking up to the klaxons of morning shows post kipping off to peel, bluejam, grooverider. i wonder what was on...kingsteven
- the entire playlist here - it's actually incredible. https://www.youtube.…kingsteven
- holy fuck, it was the felix da housecat essential mix: https://www.mixcloud…kingsteven
- you can hear the news break at the end after pete tong gets a word in, surrealkingsteven
- the mix would have ended at 4am so Diana was dead an hour earlier but was still being reported as injured at that point.kingsteven
- annie nightingale came on afterwards (bizarrely the schedule shows it was meant to be dave clarke) they broke the news of her death about an hour laterkingsteven
- realising that their royal obituary mixes weren't suitable they added this, apollo 440, nightmares on wax etc. to spice it up...kingsteven
- that's crazy stuff! a massive fav tune, up there with unfinished sympathy, takes me back to those daysprophetone
- Brilliant.MrT
- Shit like this is odd to me - clearly this was a big tune for a few of you... but I don't think i've ever heard it before, and we're all 'about the same' gen.Nairn
- they would have been on the radar of those buying up electronic chill out lps and 12”s like massive attack, portishead, tricky, way out west etcprophetone
- ‘All I Want Is You’ might be a tie w/ this for best tune from them, it’s amazing https://youtu.be/Z_i…prophetone
- I was never into records, but I was totally into those gruops (well, not Way Out West). As I say - it's odd for me that I have this total blind spot.Nairn

A person born today, when they turn 20 yo in 2040, will they perceive 90s music the same way I perceive 50s music?
- I disagree. The 50s were the dawn of the electrification of guitar and amplification. Technology was at it's infancy would take another 2 decades to discover...Morning_star
- ...electronic music. The introduction of midi and pro tools etc is still firmly in a digital realm. The transition from acoustic to electric to digital hasn't..Morning_star
- ...really moved on since the 90s. it's now not so much revolution but evolution. The menace of corporate music creation bases success entirely on commerciality.Morning_star
- The advent of affordable computer based professional digital studios has not had the revolutionary impact as the 50s electrification of the guitars etc..Morning_star
- ...I think that a 20yr old in 2040 won't perceive the 90s in the same way as we understand the 50s to be a revolutionary period for music.Morning_star
- So will a young person in 2040 be able to choose music from any of the last 5 decades (1990-2040), without thinking it's too dated/uncool?drgs
- I'd suggest, like fashion, the styles of music will change year by year but ultimately lack the revolution of the 50s, 60s, 70s. I suppose a comparison would...Morning_star
- ...be the automotive industry. From Stephensons rocket through to the model T the progress was revolutionary. Now, cars are pretty much the same across the...Morning_star
- ...the board, what distinguishes them is style.Morning_star
- My theory was that I dig the last 3 decades only because I lived through them (80's do nothing for me, even if some music is catchy).drgs
- I have memories/nostalgia from these times etc. It hit me today that young people in 2040 will never get the feeling of the 90s, the way I see this decadedrgs
- I catch your drift, I was a teen throughout the 80s and have nostalgic memories about the music played at school discos etc yet the 90s was when I truly...Morning_star
- ...discovered music and still often listen to music, mostly alt metal/grunge and trip hop.Morning_star
- inhabitants of earth - if any - will be struggling for mere survival in 2040, and not concerned with musicnuggler
- I wonder what style or genre of music will be the shiz in 2040?Ramanisky2
- Yeah I'd have to agree with what Morning_star said. Compare stuff "the kids" are listening to these days, like Kayne West or Kendrick Lamar, is it really thatyuekit
- different from 90s hip hop of 20 years ago?yuekit
- There has not been this huge leap forward between then and now purely in terms of music, although maybe there will be by 2040.yuekit
- The big change has been more about the cultural dimension, how we consume music and mix ups of different sounds and influences. No one would have predictedyuekit
- millions of kids from USA and Europe singing along to Korean pop music a couple decades ago, And all of this driven by capitalism, consumerism.yuekit
- People also seem obsessed with recreating/ recontextualizing past decades, and I think this will definitely continue in the future.yuekit
- So "90s" will be a brand or flavor that people can plug into, but of course it will never recreate the true feeling of the 90s.yuekit
- I've often wondered this - I'd love to be able to clear my head of references and listen to music anew, the way kids do. I agree with m_s hereNairn
- I've always figured that the 80s was where music started getting really mixed up and allowed for any genre, irrespective of time. Folk sits alongside electroNairn
