I still don't understand what this entails. In some ad videos people seem to be doing office work with their colleagues in the metaverse. Are you supposed to be wearing a VR set 8 hours a day?

    • No. You only put them on when you want to sexually assault a colleague.palimpsest
    • But both have to be wearing VR, so its consensual by definitiondrgs
    • It’s just a front to collect more personal data to sell to advertisers, using technology from 2003.mort_
    • Seriously, I don't even have a VR set, and even if I had one, I can't see myself wearing it for more than 15 min a daydrgs
    • Can one get laid in the Metaverse?utopian
    • That's why I think it's mostly vaporware, at least in the form Zuckerberg is trying to sell you. It's like a fake version of the future.yuekit
    • as mort_ stated, VR tech has been around for ages, people just don't want to wear shit on their face. Same reason 3D tv failed.spot13

I know its not entirely the fault of the Metaverse.. but is anyone else sensing we are about to have a Web 2.0 crash .. twitter is fucked, facebook/insta is currently being fucked.. what's left? TikTok?

Today I’m sharing some of the most difficult changes we’ve made in Meta’s history. I’ve decided to reduce the size of our team by about 13% and let more than 11,000 of our talented employees go.

    • We all hate Meta but it’s sad about layoffs. You cannot watch the monster fall without seeing some of your people crushed under the weight of it.nb

A key issue with Horizon’s development to date, according to Shah’s internal memos, is that the people building it inside Meta appear to not be using it that much. “For many of us, we don’t spend that much time in Horizon and our dogfooding dashboards show this pretty clearly,” he wrote to employees on September 15th. “Why is that? Why don’t we love the product we’ve built so much that we use it all the time? The simple truth is, if we don’t love it, how can we expect our users to love it?”

In a follow-up memo dated September 30th, Shah said that employees still weren’t using Horizon enough, writing that a plan was being made to “hold managers accountable” for having their teams use Horizon at least once a week. “Everyone in this organization should make it their mission to fall in love with Horizon Worlds. You can’t do that without using it. Get in there.”

The thing about real estate is, there's only a finite amount. In the metaverse, when space 'runs out', they'll make another metaverse on top of the old one. Then charge double.
There's already a few of them. With people paying insane amounts of money for plots of area.

    • It isn't infinite however. There is a limit to the materials that make it go. Until energy is infinite it too drives "value"ShenanigansTV

Everything about virtual worlds as landscapes seems to double down on it being just like the physical world and refuses to take advantage of the fact it isn't. It's 3D hyperlinking as topography, it's post-scarcity by default, it's massless and unbound by gravity.

Instead of the 3D hacking seen in 90s movies, these metaverse peddlers give us flat terrain from horizon to horizon, subspaces occupying space on the landscape, and you have to walk across it all manually in a massless avatar with legs glued to the floor.

    • It sort of has to be, if you have to sell it to the masses.jagara
    • The Metaverse is a hot mess!utopian
    • If you take away the virtual horizon and let people fly, they get sick and throw up.monospaced
    • Nonsense jag; we didn't need to sell the masses on links, which defy the conventions of books and letters.i_monk
    • A virtual horizon doesn't need a flat fake terrain. Where is the z-axis in these spaces? Perhaps full VR is a dead end, but maybe AR can salvage this.i_monk
    • The metaverse is misunderstood. It's not a 3D second life thing. It's *Everything* boiling down to lines of code and data.shapesalad
    • You sit a computer clicking buttons to earn money. You get paid, but it's not cash delivered to a vault, it's 01's in a computer. you pay online/via phone.shapesalad
    • You call and message online, you date online, you do everything online and pay with effetely crypto - even if it's £ and $'s, these days it is digital ledger.shapesalad
    • You don't need to plug your face into a VR headset to exist in a virtual landscape.shapesalad
    • Without the 3D/VR aspect it isn't a landscape anymore than the WWW is a digital autobahn.i_monk
    • We’ve done a lot of testing. If people aren’t grounded they quickly report feeling dizzy. Having a visual environment that’s “grounding” helps a lot.monospaced
    • This doesn’t mean you can’t have a z axis. Just means you might avoid them flying around in an environment that can cause disorientation.monospaced

I’m starting to think the metaverse will be the place we live in after we’ve lost all our money on crypto in the real world. As we’ll have no money left for anything pleasurable in the physical world. We’ll have to plug ourselves into the metaverse for any semblance of a day trip excursion.
