I just got let go because I asked for a raise. Contract was ending this week and I'd been there 18 months with no pay raise so I asked for one. They not only rejected it but took the contract renewal off the table. Everyone I speak to is baffled by this decision...I'm wondering if anyone else has dealt with something like this?

Sounds like you're better off out of there if this is how they treat you.
Move on, stiff them for contract work if they need your expertise.

If you are in Ontario, your official inflation rate is 5.7% You'd be crazy not to ask for a raise.
I don't think you did anything wrong at all. I'd take it as a sign that this place wasn't a good fit for you.
From what I hear and I'm experiencing there's A LOT of work and opportunity out there right now. I'm guessing you'll find a better gig shortly.

yeah, good on you for asking for a raise. they're dicks for sticking it to you. they could have said "no, sorry. we'd love to but we cant right now" and offered your old rate. the fact that they didn't means they would likely always treat you like a prole
Thanks folks I'm hearing similar reactions from everyone I speak to. There's a long list of people who have been fired or quit for similar circumstances in the short time I've been at this company.
I actually had a VERY validating correspondence with someone last night who is still at the company and let me know that basically their whole creative team has quit recently. I'm looking forward to applying skills I've learnt to new positions for more value.

Last time I asked for a raise at an old job they said "Focus on your job for what it is NOT what you want it to be", which was basically a no.
I now work somewhere else and everything is always on the table; feels better.
Being let go for asking for anything other than something inappropriate and/or sexual is outrageous.

Yes, this has kind of happened to me.
They asked me how I felt about the money. I said I was worth the full rate (they were paying a middle man service) but was happy with the situation. Basically I stated my value. Contract ended.
My primal response was, dang I just screwed up something good. But after my brain kicked in, I had a feeling that anyone who's going to bait me by asking about my compensation and then get mad at the response would end up being a strange client.
It all depends on what they were paying you... you gotta get yours... what I learned from the experience was to just STFU if you're ok with the deal...
Definitely worth posting on Glassdoor about it, just be careful not to libel yourself.
Leave out details. Instead of saying 18mos, say “a short time but within the reasonable range of asking for a raise.” Don’t post dates or names or your role nor anything that sounds rude or angry. Maybe wait a few months.
Basically you should think of it like posting on Glassdoor just for informational purposes so other employees and candidates know what to expect.
Companies read that shit and it drives execs mad!
- Even if he is sorta specific there’s not really much that would happen from it. It’s not illegal to domonospaced
- It’s not a crime, but you could be sued if the company thinks you’ve hurt their recruiting efforts by saying falsehoodsnb
