I killed a man by accident. I was on my way to get cigs from the bar real quick and cross some train tracks in the foggy dusk when a hobo jumped out from the other side of the berm.
“Qooooobs” he rasped, wiggling his fingers through his fingerless gloves at me.
I told him I didn't want to be bothered but he chased after me, hauling a strangely flat hobo satchel on his back. I ran down the tracks for a bit hoping I could lose him but when I crossed he tackled around my legs and we both fell down the gravel.
A short struggle ensued. As the bell for an approaching train began to ring I hit him over the head with a brick and he flew limp to one side.
No response. No pulse. No wallet or ID, but the strange satchel contained a binder with the word “portfolio” stenciled across. Within the leaflets, strange printouts of unrelated paper stock, drawings, logos.
Everything bore a strange and unnecessary style to it where all the lines ran at 45 degree angles. The last leaflet bore a stack of what seemed like business card-shaped compact disks. On the back of this satchel, a sticker with the letters Q B and N.
Suddenly, a hand shot up, grabbed me by the collar, to which I responded by beating the mans skull into a soupy pulp with my brick as the train flew by in a deafening blizzard of clattering steel.
I have since been looking for clues as to who this man was. A uni student? A young designer. I sometimes interview youngsters for a fake, nonexistent job hoping I might see his mushed up face someday whereupon I might redeem myself.

I used to check its predecessor h73 or whatever it was called, and then one day it was called Newstoday so I joined. 2000, 2001?

Don't remember.
But probably via ffffound.com

must've been around 2001-2002? something like that.
i'd been a massive fan of k10k, Zeldman, pixelsurgeon, and on and on etc...you know all the rest of those sites....
i think my path was k10k - Holodeck73 - newstodayand if i recall correctly, one of the first things i did on NT was get in an arguement with transfatty lol....
anyhow, I've been here a long, long time. I announced the birth of my daughter here back in the day, and she's about to turn 19 this summer...
like it was mentioned before...
came for the design, stayed for 'teh drama' ;)

Got a login in late '09 (was sure it had been earlier), presumably I stumbled across it on Google. Software guy (not your sort of designer) and so have mostly lurked.

My first internship in 2010 had this website as default when you opened the browser on the computer which i was working on. Some dude before me lurked on QBN.

came from newstoday .. long time listener, first time caller on QBN
can't remember exactly how I came across it, was part of that whole designiskinky, k10k cabal happening at the time

I can't recall how I ended up at Newstoday exactly, but back in 2004 I had just started my first full time web design / development job out of school and I wanted to stay current on design trends and was mostly impressed with Flash and stumbled on NT.
I was happy to get the 50% off MT discount for life (too bad that didn't pan out) and was very intimidated by the harsh criticism unleashed on anyone brave enough to post a website for a site critique and thought that it might ruin my confidence if I posted anything I designed.
I did (and do) still get a lot of inspiration and ideas from coming here although I have no idea how it keeps running and who pays for hosting, etc without ads, merch or the old job board.

~2003 An old girlfriend told me about NT. Her ex was a member here. So basically I stole one of y'alls girls back in the day :P

anyone else remember
?
Back in the day, that site was a bigger influence on me than newstoday. In terms of exposure to new styles and visual ideas.
Surprised to see the site is still going.

Link from Design is Kinky.
- remember that site, but was never on board with it, just seemed a bit 'upitself'shapesalad

I've been here since the H73 switch. Not that active but still here.

Christ, I can't remember. 2004 was a long fucking time ago. I was working nights designing newspaper ads for a local paper at that time, hopped up on cigs and Red Bull, so I'm sure that has something to do with it.

2008. First even non-freelance job. Looked over the other designer's shoulder, and there were some cool images. I asked about the site and the rest is history.
I think a couple of days later they fired half the company, other designer included

Not sure .. I thought I remembered coming to read the curated music reviews on NewsToday to discover new music, but now I'm not even sure that was NewsToday that had the reviews...
I struggle to remember what happened last week, let alone nearly 20 years ago :(

It was at a time around 2001 with several mysterious design blogs, one with a squirrel as a logo? Flash, pixel fonts...
There was also a Dutch webcam platform called Collab, the weirdest group conversations every night. Some of them were also active on Newstoday, I think that's how I got into QBN together with a colleague of mine at the design agency where we worked at the time (hi Stewardez! he can't log in to QBN anymore, his password is lost and the old email address no longer exists).
We also went to Amsterdam once for a Newstoday meeting. With Janne, Folkert, Linda, Wouter – a few names I can remember. Not sure if they're still around here. I still have digital photos of it somewhere, made with my first Canon ixus.
