I’m starting to grow some mint in the back yard and though I’d start a thread. Any of you garden? What are you growing ;or killing?) got any inspiration or tips?

I live in LA right between climate zone 10a and 10b and don't want to be stuck just growing cactuses. This book turned me in to using olla pots in my planters.

i'm big on trees 'case i don't have to fuck with 'em. got a lemon, a pomegranate, asian pear, and avocado. also a grape vine for the same reason.

in terms of other shit i always keep green onions going, i can't seem to kill those. just pop the ass end of a store-bought bunch in the ground and they take off. cannabis thrives at my place, as do poppies. tomatoes go fucking bananas.

i'm in the same zone and i can't for the life of me get mint going. same with cilantro or parsley. basil is no problem but only seems to last for about a year before having to be replaced. kale does well but cauliflower and broccoli don't get big for some reason. onions, potatoes, turnips, and beets take too long and have a poor success rate here so i don't bother anymore.

soil is everything; i recommend starting a compost bin and worm farm (both are on amazon but you can make 'em yourself). my success rate went way up when i started incorporating those, chicken poo, and fish tank water

    • Even if there’s nothing in the bed, take care of the soil; don’t let it dry out, add leaf mulch or straw to help it retain moisture) & worms will do their thingscarabin
    • my dad reckons if you want to plant a tree it's important to put a dead cat under it to give it a good boost.hans_glib
    • ++ to a worm bin. When I add it to containers I see a noticeable boost over time without having to add store bought fertilizers.koma_
    • yeah. and i would probably mess up if i used chemicals. can't really overdo it with the natural stuffscarabin

If you’re doing mint in the back yard, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PLEASE HAVE THEM IN POTS.

If in the ground, they’ll spread uncontrollably and take over your entire yard.

    • they also spread by air. from pot to where ever they find a spot to grow. also survive hot and cold weather. great plants.uan
    • Yeah the mint is getting its own pot.cannonball1978
    • How can you have too much mint? It's so delicious, I'll eat all of it.SimonFFM

We have planted lime, mint, rosemary, parsley and other aromatic herbs in the garden.

Along with that, we have two white grape vines, which this year have grown tremendously.

Very useful to have rosemary on hand, to flavor paellas and barbecues ;)

But, this year it is a pity that my wife is injured, the garden lacks care...
