Any dog offers up a good bit of protection versus random stuff (i.e. It's easier to break into a house where no dog lives).
Around here we are big fans of the Doberman. Sweet, easily trained, a great pet/companion. Also, part of their genetic make is: Protect self, home, family.
Whatever the breed, there are lots of rescue organizations available and many are breed specific. That's a very good way to go.
