Powerpoint templates (non-ugly)

    if you're talking about a presentation that you control then there's no reason you can't design it in InDesign and then import jpgs to powerpoint.

    If you're talking about a true template then certain things come into play. You can design the template in indesign but as soon as you start importing images etc, the file size goes up and your aim should be to create as small template file as possible (imagine a deck that is 200 slides long with bg jpgs etc).

    But your main enemy in PPT (and why I would never choose to use ppt) is typography. You just have no real control over any of it really. You can't fix things in place in a template as much as you'd like, and things like leading and even the way the type renders is just shockingly bad.

    I had to do a template for a large consultancy (one of my clients) as part of a global rebrand, they have 140,000 employees wordwide so it was a big deal getting it right. It actually looked pretty good in the end, very minimal, clean, no effects at all. It's just that the type let things down a bit in the end. And you have no control over what the end user will insert.
