Humans focus on cognitive ability and use that as the basis for intelligence. Consider the behaviors (sometimes very complex) encoded in an animal's DNA as intelligence and things look different. In addition attributes that animals have would be considered super-human if one were to acquire them. Night vision built in, lightning reflexes, extreme accuracy and balance, smelling cancer inside a living body, sensing impending earthquakes, endless examples; must be why Buddhists see all life as equal, it's in the eye of the beholder.
