    I don't know if blaming Russia is silly. They are, after all, supporting the rebels.

    As for Putin not wanting this to happen, who knows? He can basically pitch the whole of Europe into another depressing simply by raising the price of energy; which effectively make any round of sanctions from the EU toothless. He knows he holds the trump card, and this incident happening serves to reinforce Russia's position in this respect.
