    having been on both sides of the interviewing desk i can't imagine how anyone would have the audacity to request a 'working interview'.

    maybe it's different in the design world - i don't know, but as an outsider my perspective is if their work/portfolio is good and they respond well to my open-ended questions about their work history and passion for their work and their references pan out, what else is there???

    that seems very demeaning to me and nothing personal to anyone who's done it - again, not in your industry - but it makes you look like a desperate chump to jump through such ridiculous hoops like that!
