Go to somewhere like http://www.overclockers.co.uk/sy… and configure a base-level machine. Get it without Windows installed, then install Linux on it.
About the same price as an XBOne or a PS4
Then install Minecraft and a boatload of free creative software like GIMP (shit, compared to PS, etc, but still, for kids?) and then get Steam installed so you can access a wealth of Linux games.
Give them something they can tinker with, should they want to. Something they can peer into and prod and try and get a feel for what it actually IS.
Consoles are .. less than great for kids, imho.
I've felt this ever since I was a kid, I'm not just getting old!
