Recruiters, do they help?

Yes. I can speak highly of Creative Circle here in Chicago. They get a bad rap from people for a variety of reasons which I can only surmise comes down to thinking they - or any recruiter - are going to get you a sweet job when you have no experience to speak of. I didn't use a recruiter until I had 11 years of experience, looking for a new job in 2013.
I did get contacted - and still do - by several recruiters that didn't give the impression they could get me a job at a place I actually wanted to work. There are so many IT specific recruiters out there trying to get into more creative and UX recruiting and they just don't have the ability to get people into top agencies.
I can speak highly of Onward Search as well. They got me my current job that went from freelance to full time back in August.
But again, I have to stress that if you don't have much experience, it's going to be tough for any recruiter to be open to talking to you.
