Nothing. Nothing you can do short of re-scanning or painting the images over again.
Making mini-mini-mini-super-small images?
If the images are large 72 you can resample but it can blur your images.
You've got to get the originals or charge to make new images.
I've had to charge the shit outta people because they had someone else design their logo and I've had to recreate it (Illustrator) while I watched steam come out of their ears. Same thing with photos.
I've found that being a freelance designer involves a lot of "client-training". Arrgh! Oh well... I still can eat!!
Good luck!

just use 'em as they be boy, no need to fix em up, it'll have a quality that's hard to beat. make sure any logos or other graphics are of the same ilk.

no, this guy knows exactly what he wants... i think ive gotten it better with tweaking some filters, but it still looks poopy. unless anyone has any good tips, im going to leave it like this. im getting paid barely anything for this, so im not going to bother spending time tweaking it any longer.

'72 dpi' on it's own doent mean much... (i.e. I could give you a 2048x1536 image nominally at '72dpi' and It would work fine)
I think you should show the client how small (in x by y pixel dimensions) the image he gave you is... put it next to a typical image from another job... and insist on quality material if they want quality with...
...or is it a one off image that they just cant replace with a bigger one?

getting paid barely anything?
fuck it... i wouldn't spend more than 2 and a half hour on that shit.

they want the 6 inch 72dpi image to be a 6 inch 300 dpi image
this is a quick job, so reasoning with this guy wont work. i just want a fix to the problem.
oh well, i did the best i could. *shrug*

If it's really small, like internet photo or similar the best you can do is this:
1. Resize the image to the print size you need at 300 dpi (basically if it doesn't have to be high high end print and it doesn't have rasterized text on the image 200-225 dpi should be fine)
1. Filter>Noise>Despeckle
(Use despeckle a couple of times to kill the compression sideeffects 3-4 times should be sufficient but you might have to do more depending on the compression)2. Filter>Noise>Add Noise
(Settings for the noise should be:
a) Amount 3-5% you might have to go up to 7%
b) Distribution should be Uniform
c) Unmark Monochromatic if it's onCheers.

you could have had the fucking thing finished by now if you hadn'y been yapping on the PV-AN ya daft skite. ''they want"-!!! what d'you want bucko??

there's no need for 300 dpi. you can print good quality in 150 dpi and no one sees the difference.
take the image to photoshop and resize it from 72 - 150 dpi. then use gaussian blur for losing most of the errors. then sharp 'em a little bit if needed and in the end, noise the image a little bit.
and tell your client the need of HQ pictures for print. it's nessesary for him to understand.

well, if you dont have this one sussed out already, here bees my method.
clone the layer, resize the whole image. gaussian blur a lil bit (despeckle is good to play with as well.
then when you get the image pretty well fuzzy, use the Unsharp Mask filter, turn the radius WAY up and the amount down a bit.then i would play with the layer options (multiply, soft light, etc)
so that you can mix the original and the altered image to get a better detail.this isnt magic though, a shit pic will still look like a shit pic.
also, pascii is right about 300dpi vs 150dpi (same dimensions otherwise). the only way the guy would need 300dpi is if he plans on printing out some high res shit, and even then i suggest going the 150 route.also please be sure to explain the concept of making chicken shit into chicken soup. it just doesnt work unless you like eating soupy chicken shit.
good luck there squirt.
