double click the speaker icon on the toolbar to open the sound properties - it may be on mute?

Check control panels, sound. Check the sound icon in the system tray, go under advanced if you have to - to make sure everything that needs to be checked is checked, and everything that needs to be unmuted is unmuted. Check the plugs. All else fails, go into device manager, remove the sound card, reboot, depending on the newness of the OS (98se and up should) install drivers automatically, back to default.

right click on the "my computer" icon on the desktop, goto the properties. Then you should see a device manager tab on the top. Click hat see if tere are any !s. If you dont ee any of those, goto the sound dept. double click on the audio controllers and remove them or update either should do the job. You will have to reboot the system in any case. Or just make them get a mac.
