does anyone have that link to communications arts (or others) that gives a ball park number in terms of salaries for designers?
much appreciated

those salaries are generally bullshit. how in the hell does a 'web producer' make more than a 'web designer'?

a producer does all the schedualing, dealing with the client.. filtering things before it gets to the art director and designers. they keep everyting on point and on schedual.. and if they are working in LA they most likely are on th ephone non stop with disney, paramount and all those other fucks moaning about something. they also try to head off any problems with going over budget... recording and tracking hours... and estimating and billing change orders as the project rolls forward. they also organize creative meetings and all around baby everyone and make sure everythign is ok. there's a lot of hand holding producers do and a ton of organization. most of the producers ive met never have time to eat and end up doing a lot of overtime to put out fires. i think it really depends on what kind of firm youre working for though. some places make the designers or art directors double as producers as well. but, this usually causes problems and eventually if the work is good -- would become too much for a designer to do both jobs.

i hope i explained it well?

also, ive noticed at the firms ive worked at producers also go to a lot of meetings, read a lot of scripts and write summeries for the designers.. they double check work before it goes out the door to the client or gets posted... do research and all that kinda good stuff. when projects are big producers are actually really usefull.
the main personality difference between producers and designers i see is they can actually deal with people and situations much better than ive even seen ADs and CDs do. they are the voice of reason to the client. this life skill alone is very valuable to a team, thus they get paid pretty well. without them projects can go to shit and clients will hate you.
many of you are freelancers and learned to produce projects and sort of be an account manager as well. but you know even working for yourself.. the bigger the the projects get the more you want to work with someone who can take some of that load off you and do it well.
i'm definately looking for a good producer to hire on a project by project basis so i can focus on getting the work done and not answering a 100 requests i get in my email and by phone. and, god it would be nice for someone to keep my shit in order. i think i didnt realize how awesome (good) producers were until i had to start doing it myself.
