I'm developing a site for one of my clients who has existing markets in China. What do I need to know about URL and search engine filtering in China?
mydo, jevad? you guys on-line?
Indeed, if anyone else has experience / knowledge please let me know. Cheers.

what do u mean with 'filtering'? Censoring??
url; .com.cn, or if they want it city based, you can use .bj.cn or sh.cn for beijing or shanghai
be aware that using china, or sino in the name may give complications. The government pet corporations here all have sino in their name, and don't care for other associations.

Yes, by filtering I mean censoring.
Ultimately my question is what should I, should I not do / say within the site to stand the best chance of it not being filtered by the Chinese government?
My client has a .com url

nicko as far as i can tell google works in china but you cant access many information, cnn you can not access in mainland china at least i never could but bbc was easily accessible...newstoday is very accessible if that counts for something, yahoo no werk at my hotel in china... i dont want to goto china anymore..

e-pill: no worries; they are loosening up gradually. Yes: BBC & CNN are on time delay, so they can pull it off-air when news on Taiwan is being aired. But compared to 5 years ago, there is a lot more openess.
Having said that: they have cencoring in place. Don't use words such as democraty or tibet or anything taiwan taipei related. Then again; why should u if it is a corporate site.
Your concern should be: is your url accessible. I know people here that have a site hosted with yahoo, used sino in the url, and are blocked. You may want to host a sister site in Hong Kong or so to bypass this.

register the domain name to a chinese address and have chinese hosting. google recently became a registrar to check out these things!

Thanks for the info fellas.
I guess I ought to think twice about putting any of my client's case studies up if they are based in Taiwan / Tibet etc. I guess I may need to call on you guys in China to get it tested once the site is a bit more developed.
Thanks again.

China don't like Freedom.

I think America should invade them.
- SirLawrence0
nicko - no worries
jazx - despite what governments say = none of the like freedom for the masses. Just that every government has degrees of allowed & projected sense of freedom. Or do u really believe the way the news is covered in the USA is the same as it is in Britain, is the same as it is anywhere else?
China may not project the concepts of allowing the freedom u think u may have. Doesn't mean that every here feels oppressed. Perhaps ignorant, but that goes for a lot of other nationalities as well.
Though they betr keep their hands of Taiwan - heheheh!
