how do you print on the edge of a book?
those of you familiar with Sagmeister's 'made you look' monograph will notice his was done with bleeds on everypage.
see here:
http://www.tdctokyo.org/awards/a…there must be a shortcut? software?
anyone know, before I bother Stefan

have you ever seen it done withoud bleeds?
I have a Maeda book and he does it with bleeds as well.
You could always just have it printed, bound, then screened on.

ask around at printers'
there may be a way to do some sort of sublimation printing after binding.

I believe that it is silkscreened afterwards.
Paula Scher's book "Make it Bigger" has the same concept on the outer edges of the pages and when you open it you can hear the paint seperate.

well, I've see it 'screened' on before, but that was solid color
a lot of old (even new) bibles have metallic gold that appears to be inked on after binding.
now with Maeda doing it, you know that mofo wrote some software on his own.
yeah, I will have to ask around the printers.
but I almost forgot with 'Made You Look' you actually have to bend the pages for it to appear! fookin ace.

its a simple trick:
take a photo or a word or whatever, mask 1/8 of it on the edge of the first page then copy/paste the same on the next page. on the second page move the word/image down a few pixels, keeping the mask in the same place. copy/paste repeat

xylene transfer? is this for major production or just a couple?
my friend was telling me about the gold leaves they used for the bibles the other day. she's an old book fanatic. i'll ask her if she knows of any techniques. best of luck!
