Put together a piece for a gallery out in california. they're running a show called 'the box show' where they sent out boxes to about 150 artists.. mostly locals. as long as the box is used in the piece it can take on any form.
in 2003 I did this piece - http://keithcorcoran.com/boxshow…
but this year i did this -
my uncle who actually cuts the wood for the boxes hinted that they wanted something to make some noise.. this should probably do it for them.
(i'm not making any kind of statement whatsoever with this piece... just put it together to make people think and evoke some emotions.)
it's currently untitled so i'm open to suggestions. one thought was calling it "sept 10th"
the show opens tomorrow and runs until sep 4th at http://www.galleryrouteone.org gallery route one in marin county, cali.
k.ps. sorry about the links.. i tried 4 different ways to make the link active and cant figure it out.

mildly sensical. why is it all wrapped in money? islamic extremism is purely ideological. it would have made more sense to wrap one half with cash, the other half with pages from the koran.

drunk and talking out of my ass, I like the box wrapped in money. to me it looks like it represents the exploitation of a radical ideology for profit. I really like it skankdOg; probably pisses people off, in a good way...

funny thing is that this piece was more like one of those things you say in a conversation without really thinking about it.. then you go back later and wonder what you were thinking. in fact.. it was exactly like that.
after i did it i read up more on what da vinci's last supper depicted.. which was christ getting everyone together to let them know what was about to happen.
this could be interpreted as that.. which is why someone suggested calling it "9/10"
the money... well.. i had to cover it with 'something' haha.
i think many people have agreed that we're only in iraq to protect US interests... aka 'in it for the money'the koran pages would have took this over the top for sure.. but i think that would REALLY be sacreligious as opposed to 'defacing' (no pun intended) another artists interpretation of a biblical event.
i mean if i wanted to go that far.. i'd probably have just put bin laden on a crucifix. (wow.. it's hard for me to even think about that)

sacrelige is like the superbowl for the arts

groovy. good to see some brave artists... keep it up and becareful.

yeah. careful.
i've gotten the reaction from people across the spectrum from...be ready for death threats...
to...
eh.. i don't think it's that bad.i'm on the fence about it and just bracing for whatever comes. initially i was just going to send it out without my name on it because talking to some people really had me shook.
but talking to others.. and thinking about it without having it in front of me to stare at.. i'm almost numb to it.
tonight's the opening so i guess we'll see what happens.

i think it's rather disrespectful to:
1.) christians who aren't fanatics
2.) da vinciIt's also a completely unoriginal imho - you're trying to make a political point that's everywhere in the media already - whether art, music, editorial etc... all I have to do is turn on the TV or read the news and your political opinion is staring me straight in the face.
I think you wasted your box.

this is 'bandwagon' art - same bullshit everyone's talking about right now... find something else to make a point about.
- shankd0g0
more like art by request actually if you read the initial post. as for 'making a point' or displaying my political opinion.. again.. reread the original post...
1. i don't have a point... and it's entirely open to interpretation. in fact just before i sent it, my wife was being nice to some jehova witnesses that came by.. they got into a talk about creativity and she asked me to show them what i was doing. i was reluctant but if nothing else... it'd keep them from coming back... the JW's interpretation of it.. she felt it showed that even in times like these there's still a chance for us to all sit together and work things out. a little to altruistic to me but it's what she saw.
2. i don't have a political opinion. honestly.. there's nothing you.. or i can do about what's going on as evident by the amount of people who were against bush's reelection... yet here we are.
if there's a statement that i'm making here.. as a 10 year us army infantry veteran having served in desert storm v1... it's 'what's the point' it's all about money anyway.
but thanks for your opinion.

yeahbro... ever checkout http://www.illegal-art.org/
Keep it up. Originality is overrated... to me, good art creates a feeling in the audience which says: "I can see why they did it"... your work did it to me.
peace.

nah. first time i'm seeing that site.. thanks for the link. there's a last supper piece on there too.. the last pancake breakfast or something. uses all the cereal characters at the table.
cool site though.. good read.
got a call from the gallery. opening went well.. no one was really freaked out by the box but there were a lot of people around it at times.. talking and discussing.
would have been cool to include a webcam on the box and get people's reactions, comments, etc.

i dont mean to be rude but that's the sort of shock art I'd expect from a college student.
there's nothing in it... least not for me.

Hey shankdog, i think the problem that PonyBoy might be having is that there is obviously a point, and an opinion to this work.
Personally if someone goes after it, you should be able to defend your concept the same way serrano did with 'Piss Christ' ( previous link )
If you can't do this, and there really is no point, then you are just trying to shock us, and frankly we've seen this type of 'shock' before, but you seem a little more intelligent and sincere than that.
- shankd0g0
you know what i think it is.. i honestly created it with no clear statement or vision in mind.. yes.. part of it was meant to shock, raise eyebrows, etc.
the other part obviously came from 'somewhere'. like i said.. i served in desert storm... i'm watching world events unfolding and though i don't really have any serious political leanings.. i know i'm sick of what i see these days.
what's wierd is during construction of it i really wasn't thinking at all. just very focused on the execution of it. after it was done i sat for a while before i sent it off to really think about what it meant to me and why I did it.
the more i think of it.. the more it seems to be the product of my subconscious.
k.
- shankd0g0
wow. i said "it" a lot in that last post.
