What do you guys do when looking for new business/clients? Is it cold calling? Do you buy mailing lists and mailshot potential clients, then call them up...
My little design business is just getting of the ground and I need to get some new clients, I want to start local to where I live but I am not sure how to go about it...
How do you distinguish which companies might require a design service?
Any advice would be greatfully received!
Cheers

hand out business cards to everyone you meet. Go to your local business associations and talk to them, you may have to humor them that you are actually going to join.

Mailers. I'm new to running my own studio and I was suprised by the response I had to some simple mailers. Definately a good investment.
Also look for bad design, like the ads in the back of magazines. Send them info, show them what they could look like.

Nothing... just do some kick ass work and take care of the clients you do have. You'll get people calling. Customer service!!! for some reason, a lot of web design companies/designers flake out with clients. Use that to your advantage. And have business cards... doh, i really need to get mine to the printer.

Quite indescriminately sometimes, Yellow Pages etc
But I often look for local businesses that look like they need a helping hand.
