what are you trying to do?
if you are trying to make something like that hummer pic, use levels, contrast, and add noise.

thanks for the quick response guys...what i'm trying to achive is to have a b/w image look "dirty" and have most of the shadows darker than normal. Its where I want it to be almost black and yet have the outlines and details still visible. does that make any sense? i already tried adjusting with curves, brightness and contrast...it didn't look right.

ctrl+L away :)

or you could do it by hand w/your burn tool... it'll take a few extra minutes(big deal!)... but it'll be exactly what you want cuz you did it 'by hand'.

also try duplicating your image on a new layer, multiply it and play with the opacity.
