To start off with never turn done a job, abnd don't undervalue yourself.

roughly 20-30% of your week should be lining up new work

go buy some new smoking parafenelia, get an accountant, and start keeping all and every receipt you can.

make sure you have something set back for the slow months - esp. in the beginning.

You need to be very disciplined. Coprporate is slack compared to running your own show. And you need a good team around you. Dont smoke pot until the day is done and dont masturbate to porn all day either. :)

----------------------if you truly value your work, there should be LOTS of job-turnin'-downin'...
unless you want to doom yourself to eternal client whoredom
- e-pill0
thats true, i turn down work all the time, but in turn i also always provide a back-up designer for the job so i never lose face with the client.
as a freelancer its you, not someoneelse. so start becoming picky with what you want to be as a freelancer...
also get it IN WRITING!!!
EVERYTHING IN WRITTING ...make sure its all spelt out for you pre-start of job.
here is a goood resource for creating your very own INVOICE::

and start becoming more of a wake and bake personality!!!!

what about those talent agencies?

get some contract written up, with T&Cs - if anyone has any good resource links or advice on how to get these done well please let us know!! I haven't been through an agnecy for work as yet and everything coming in has been down to luck or word of mouth.
Get that book too - it may help.. "how to be a graphic designer without losing your soul" even if we all managed it before that book was even out it could help

Networking all the way! Get your name out there. Keep on the good side of clients, as they will tell other potential clients nice things about you and with any luck work will start falling in your lap! Chase the kinda clients you wanna work for! Best of luck dude!
