I am going to begin looking for a job after being in mine for quite sometime.
How do YOU apply for positions. I used to send a nice email with samples, resume. It's been awhile and i was wondering what people have seen/done that really caught the attention of the employer.

your experience should speak for itself

well sure... but some things grab the attention better than others. I've hired a few people here and i can say the people who don't just send in a cover letter resume usually are the first ones i looked at.
no one?

Honestly, my previous work just spoke for itself. That's how I got my last two jobs.

For higher level jobs I would suggest creativity though.

I've never had a job interview... I'm sure it would be an eye opener

(Jan 26 07, 07:18)I got a few jobs without an interview because they figured I knew everything based on my previous places of employment.

Just be yourself - if not you will come across as trying too hard and fake...A little sense of humor never hurt anyone either (except that guy who laughed to death! ok that was bad). If you show that you are very serious about your work, but know how to have a good time then they will know that you wont break down under alot of pressure...hope that helps

I don't have a problem with being myself- interview wise, just looking for different ways to initally present myself.

I've read alot of interviews with top guys in the industry, and it seems like they dont really like when you send them a custom can box with your work printed at kinkos and your resume on a 5x5 letterhead, instead they like a very professional resume both printed and PDF formats with the adequate information for them to get interested in learning about you and your printed samples. let your work and experience speak for themselves not a weird looking resume.

try making a promo item, like a booklet about something in the industry, or some vehicle where you can convey your knowledge on the subject that might not be readily expressed in a cover letter or resume. or start a blog about whatever interests you and send them the link.

write a cover letter. in most professional opportunities ive had, a good cover letter gets them to read your resume, and then land you an interview.
and always insist on coming in for an interview if youre emailing, at their convenience.

mrseaves. check your email.

a snippet of what i sent below.
----
a few years ago i worked at artisan staffing downtown chicago so i've seen hundreds of resumes and talked to companies 1 on 1 and know what they're looking for.
1. a cover letter
in the lower right hand corner of my resume you'll find mine. that's what i use in the body of the email (with minor modifications you'll read below) i send to a company that i'm looking to get hired on with. i change it up slightly to make it more personal. ie. company name. a persons name if applicable. short. sweet. to the point.2. resume
70% of the resumes we got were more than one page. a no no. it's hard to put it all on one page but trust me, design it well all on one page and it's huge. it doesn't have to get into too much detail. the details are gone over in the interview, the resume just gives a synopsis of where you've been and what you've done.3. portfolio.
i put the link in the initial cover letter email after the last sentence in the paragraph. "... i can be reached in the evenings or during the day at 630.xxx.xxxx and have a portfolio you can view at www.xyz.com"give them the portfolio right away in the email. some companies will bypass your resume and hit the work up front not wanting to waste time reading your resume. if the work is good then they come back to the resume.
if they go to the resume first i put the portfolio link large at the top so they can see it.
hope this all helps. good luck and keep us posted.

nicey kona, that was helpful based on your experience. Any chance I get a copy of that sample? just in case...

osfa. Email sent.
Oh, and I worked at a place called AllMedia Staffing for a while in 99 too but that place was cheesy as hell.
Landed a buddy of mine though that I graduated with at EA Sports in Hoffman Estates when they were still relatively small. He's making HUGE amounts of money now as a lead designer. FUCK! I wish I'd applied for that job instead of sending him there. Each time they roll out a new game I kick myself in the ass.

thanks partna'.
