after effects orbital camera question

I am hoping that one of you afx bods can answer this question for me.
I have set up a composition using 3d layers to create a sort of 'faux' 3d object and now I want to orbit around the object that I have created.
Sounds simple in theory - just orbit and make keyframe. This works to an extent - but as the timeline moves from one point to another the whole object zooms towards the camera and the back away as you approach the next point!!!!
...really fookin annoying!
How can I achieve a 360 orbit without it yoyoing back and forth to the camera?
I have done the usual googlisms but all I hav found is that the orbital camera is not straight forward.
Any help, advice, tuts or pointers much appreciated.

if i remember correctly.. create a null object and have the null object rotate around your 3d object. set the camera as a child of the null object.
sorry havent used ae in awhile and dont have a copy on my powerbook.

...cheers dijitaq - appreciat ethe reply ;-)
I'll give that a whizz...

or parent the object you want to rotate around to a new null object, then just rotate the null object instead of the camera.

...hey jpea ;-)
the object I am trying to orbit around is mde up of many layers!
...basically I have created a 3d object using 3d layers and extruding them 1 px at a time...
so not 100% what I am doing!

...cheers dijitac - that seems to have nailed it.
Nice one for that...
