OK, slightly behind the times but what is it called and how is it done.
"click on a thumbnail > overlays an opaque background and then loads in a larger image..."
Just been going through my history but couldn't find an example to show you.
Does anybody know what I am on about? Is it a flash component, is it CSS, is it JavaScript???
Cheers!

I think its not a trend, its an ajax template, but I might be wrong..

don't do it, i find it annoying, especially when you have to close it everytime to flip to other ones

even though I use i myself (not for long). it's not a very good solution... takes too long to browse work, especially if the tumbnails is some small-ass cropped image.

Here is what 37S has to say:

I, on the other hand, like it.
Call out the firing squad.

You can't use iFrames because people will bitch, you can't use flash because programmer types will bitch, now you can't use lightbox because people will bitch.

Just use straight html and no css. And describe your work in song. No images. Its so 2008.

I used it once, about 1 1/2 ago, to fix a site that was already made with pop-up windows for the large pictures... so it was a good solution to replace pop-up windows... I'm sure there are better ways of doing this type of picture/thumbnail layout...
My boss at the time said - hey this website here the pop-up blockers are blocking their pictures album, fix it by the end of the day. So I did what I had to do, and everyone was happy.

im not a web designer and i use it!!! that means you better be creating something a hella lot more dynamic than i can.
using it is the simple easy way out.
i didnt need any instructions it comes pre-packaged.
there is a few many versions of it on the net lightbox, thickbox, red fish blue fish....
be more imaginitive and create something new...
or do it jsut like mine.
however, you should know if you are looking for work and it IS what you showcase your "portfolio" with, then you arent even worth hiring for the job.
thats my 55¢.

Fuck, my portfolio uses frames...and the work sucks. Therefore, dress smart, use jargon, and it helps when the interviewer is a female, and your one hot-ass mother fucking mans-man.
- GT_10
Jack, you hire a real man to be your proxy in the interview?
- JackRyan0
I hire a mexican, thats what we all do.
- edd-e0
Jack, is it the same if your interviewer is gay?
- JackRyan0
Yes, but hiring a hot latino as a proxy would not apply. I would just go myself, and throw up afterwards.

On a serious note...I have to get my shit together on start working on my new "book," the one up now is almost 3 years old. I'm not a programmer, so using something like lightbox is appealing, any other good stuff out there? I saw that flash one, where you make pdf "pages," and it makes it look like your flipping through a magazine.
