ive been working with a band on the development of there press kit / up coming album artwork / and various other elements... that being said the band is wondering if they 'need' a logo or if there artwork and everything else would be enough.
any thoughts on this ?

what you mean by 'there press kit'? there where?
you can always direct them to http://pictograms.blogspot.com/2…
and let them judge for themselves.

I believe that the majority of bands could do well with a nice logotype... as for a pictogram, that should be used more sparingly. IMO if the band doesn't have something in mind for a pictogram they don't need one. However if they came up with their name based on like a drawing by one of the members, that might be good to work from.

Band logos really help. Actually, any kind of visual identity helps a music act immensely. Look at what visual identity did for David Bowie, Dizzy Gillespie, Josephine Baker, Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix, Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Madonna, etc.
Look at what good/recognizable logos did for ABBA, The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, NIN, The Sex Pistols, The Ventures, and James Bond!!
