When InDesign says my text size is "11pt(9.85)" what's going on? It seems to happen when I copy and paste from one document to another, but I can't figure out how to get rid of that second point size.

it's because you have scaled it down or up by hand and not with the character tool
shame on you!

you can reset all scaling to actual size in that upper right thingie

That happens when a text box has been scaled, so the first number is the size that it originally was, the second is the actual point size. Its annoying but can be fixed.
Go to your preferences, then type then make sure that 'Adjust Tye attributes when scaling' is checked. That'll stop it from doing it in the future.
For niggly little bits, chose the arrow tool, then select the text box, then select 'Transformation are totals' from your main palate arrow.

CS3 *does* do it and they *removed* the upper right thingy for fixing it! Halp halp! Same problem as above!

Nevermind, they moved it and gave it a new name and hid it away. Idiots.

CS3 does it with collapsible palettes
