I'm about to get into 3D (motion) a lot more, and previously have used Maya, however, I'm being told to pick up Cinema 4D.
Anyone use either of these? What app do you use for 3D and why?

yes download the trial version and you will be king your domain in no time.

not hard if you already know how to use maya.

I really despise Maya's interface. It is the Vista of 3d apps as far as I'm concerned....way too much clutter, too inconsistent, too many "buried menus" I started learning on Blender and have a very good grasp on 3d, so it was frustrating as hell to try and fight Maya's interface. I just couldn't find the stuff I needed.
Cinema 4d would be a fine choice. I'm in the process of learning Lightwave right now and I'm also liking how the interface is so obvious.

seems like lightwave is dying in popularity. what are you planning on working on with lightwave?

Tried Maya...too complex
3DS Max easier.

Didn't know that they use Cinema 4D for the Golden Compass movie..

I used Maya for several years and after all that time, was still deeply confused. The thing about Maya is that it is intended for a team of workers, as opposed to C4D, which is great for the solo user or small group.
That's definitely a thing that people, myself included, forget to look at when choosing a package - the intended workflow.

if you want to get serious use xsi

I absolutely love C4D, and use it every day, paired with After Effects. Its the best 1-2 punch in the broadcast design world. For tracking footage and grabbing 3d data into AE and C4D, try SynthEyes. Its working really well for me, for a green shoot we did.

harlquino has a great point. maya is easily customizable and make it a great choice in a film environment where specialized functionality can be added.
c4d on the other hand makes for a great generalist's tool. it covers most of the bases that other packages do but does it in a way that's more intuitive to a 3D newcomer.
i'd venture to say that in the motion graphics world, c4d is becoming more and more the prominent 3D sidekick to after effects.

regarding motion tracking: C4D has no motion tracking. after effects has it, but really sucks compared to the apps below.

on the learning tip, i think Maya has just about the most training available for a 3D app, in the form of DVDs, books, tutorials sites, etc and rightly so... that app takes years to master. on the other hand, c4d has a significantly less number of DVD and web training resources, and even fewer books (good ones at least).
in addition to the sites posted earlier, these two sites are essential for learning c4d:

3ds Max, because I'm so used to working in that environment. Though recently I've been using Blender more and more because it's free and it's a very powerful program with tons of great plugins and scripts available... all free.
