Animator for identity?

My flatmate needs someone who's willing to help him come up with a short 15 second, 2d paper cut-out style animation for his design identity. Logos provided. Needs to be pro-bono. Good project for someone starting out who's looking to beef up their portfolio and gain some extra exposure. Should lead to future paying gigs if things go well (good communication, production, etc.) If one of you are interested, reply with your email for more details, OR, if you know of someone who might be willing / leads etc. then def fill us in! Thanks!

look man,
'beefing up you portfolio, gain exposure & leads to paying gigs'
are traps. If somebody puts a lot effort in making something for
you they have to get paid (doesn't have to be alot though...).
Otherwhise the work is not validated.
Don't exploite, just scrape a little bit of cash together and pay
a young gun for this.

is a short 15 seconds, actually 3 seconds?
- rybo0
hit me up man this is perfect for me ryan@echoaroundtown.co.uk my site is currently down atm but im defo willing to do this
- ukit0
Hey rybo, I have some more pro bono work if you're interested. An endless supply actually:D
- rybo0
hey ukit email me with details i use after effects if thats any help to anyone
- tank020
rybo, don't do it or charge a bit for it.
Use your free time to work on the jobs
u like doing (personal work) but for the rest
you have to charge. believe me, i'm speaking
from experience I did a lot of pro bono work
when i just graduated and that never
got into my portfolio.

look man,
'beefing up you portfolio, gain exposure & leads to paying gigs'
is the equivalent of some old perv in the park offering you free candy if you go with them.
- rybo0
ok after reconsidering i would do it for £100 or $150

Seeing how really good solid motion design is worth several grand, how about your flat mate redesigns the animator's portfolio or if he's print-only designs his identity package and prints a nice set of take away one-sheets. If he thinks it's ok for someone else to work for free, why not put his money where his mouth is and barter.

I personally started out doing a lot of pro bono work that turned into paying gigs. If its something simple that doesn't take a lot of time and is something you can be proud of and use as an example of your work, then it is a wise investment in your future. Would you rather have no work to show for yourself, or work that you did for actual clients in your portfolio? I don't know how much experience you have tank02, but when you show your book, the question always comes up "which of these are personal work and which did you do for actual clients?"....and half the time they aren't interested in your personal work, no matter how good it may be, because it didn't involve outside direction / collaboration. It doesn't show that you are able to take a client's vision and direction and turn it into a viable piece. I feel that a lot of you need to wake up and realize that the world isn't going to bow to your every demand, because if you're waiting for that to happen, you'll wind up broke.
Rybo, it is not the most professional approach to offer a service for free and then all of the sudden decide to charge. Why would someone be interested in something you were willing to give away for free, just moments ago, and now you want them to pay?
That being said, rybo, if you could point me to some examples of your work, I would be interested in seeing it! If the quality is in line with what we are looking for, then we would consider paying, although we were looking at this as an opportunity for someone who's just starting out to showcase their work, if we're going to pay anything at all, then we might as well pay for something we like and is worth it.
Thanks,
Dex- see there you go,
its has to be for free but still quality...you hypocrittank02 - billrodgers, you really are an asshole, aren't you?doesnotexist
- since you want it for free, how bout YOU show us some examples of your work so we can decide if you're worth the troublespl33nidoru
- ..troublespl33nidoru
- Billrogers is an asshat. Working for free is unprofessional. I'm not going to go on a rant, but it's bullshit!Melanie
- see there you go,

billrodgers:

funky 15 second, hand made style motion is my absolute specialty but i wouldn't do it for free. a small price but he'd get quality from a noobish sort. email if you'd like i'll show some work.

Seems strange to ask a stranger to work for free.
As Harlequino suggested, a trade would be fairer.
- I agree, but he wanted to see if anyone was interested...

not true, bill.
in fact i got a lot of job thru personal projects.
all i am saying, pro bono work is shit,
people are gonna put a lot effort in a 15 sec short,
so its logic there is pay involved.
if not, thats disrespect from the beginning,
its treating graphic design as an art form
and acting like you are doing him a favour, but its actually vice versa. its stuff like this that makes our job so fucked up.
like the unpaid pitches and all the other crap.
if you hire a beginning painter to paint your house,
would you also ask to do it pro bono, because its great exposure?let me end with some words
- I'm with tank02 on this one!boobs
- I think we all are. Including the ones are nor here and the ones that don't know about QBNVectorMasked

I am of the same opinion as harlequino if you want something from someone you must in turn do something for them, remember the essence of the whole animation is to promote this persons own logo which he or she wants an animator to do for free, You are saying it's great for your portfolio in the same way as personal work is, not doing it for clients is fucking bollocks I got a wicked job from only my personal stuff as my day to day stuff is crap because clients like crap it's simple clients generally speaking fuck up a brilliant piece of work.
You want something for free do something in return for free.
I'm not pissed off at you by the way it seems a bit harsh but no I'm not pissed off at you :)
- tank020
I'm also not pissed btw,
i just question the for free, great exposure rhetoric.
This is not personal.

If you had a friend who wanted to help you out for free that would be one thing. But coming onto a designer BB and asking a total stranger to donate their time for nothing, you can see why people might object.
- true, i help a lot friends out for free, but thats friendship.tank02
- yes, friendship is a give and take relationship.doesnotexist
- tank020
btw doing personal work just got me featured in
idn magazine, so it does work.

For instance, I had a legal problem a while back and a friend of mine who is a lawyer offered to take care of it for free. But it would be kind of weird if I started asking random lawyers to handle it for free to burnish their credentials. For some reason people seem to devalue design as a profession, as much as we can we should discourage that idea.
- tank020
by the way,
gotta love how people cover up the fact the ' for free'
aspect by calling it pro bono.
Pro bono publico (usually shortened to pro bono) is a phrase derived from Latin meaning "for the public good." The term is sometimes used to describe professional work undertaken voluntarily and without payment as a public service.a public service.
that means for a charity, for the envirnoment, etc...
so not for promoting your buddie, or is he wwf panda?
