My friend and I just completed our first 3D job.
http://ephix.net/files/benz/Merc…
The video is being played at a Mercedes Benz corporate event in China on a massive 16x3 screen.
It was built in about 2 weeks so there were a few glitches that we didn't have time to fix so ignore those. How would you 3d guys improve on this kind of work?

The planets and solar system look great. I am not sure about the control and instrument panels within the space craft, they look really dated and cliche.

This shit is really hard to do, and for a first gig, you did a great job. I've been trying on and off to wrestle with this jazz for a few years now. What I would say to add a little constructive criticism is — texture, texture, texture. I really believe that's the key to achieve realism and that visual "awe" we strive for. Think about every surface and how you can tweak the textures. Especially the controls and dashboard readout stuff you had. That will take it to the next level of detail. :)

nice work! what's the choon?

Very nice. What software do you use? I was interested in the trails effects on the space ship.
I like the part where the ship flies over the type. The only glitch I really noticed was the 2d plane image of space in the beginning that took away from the feeling of being in an environment.

textures and lighting need a lot of work. also try adding more depth of field. it requires a lot of trial to get it right.
it looks pretty good for the first 3d work though. i think 3D requires a lot of artistry and vision to make it look great.
also start your own texture library. i used to scan magazines, take pictures of everything i thought might be useful.also looking at other's work will help you give more ideas. take a look at some of these.

Nice, enjoyed it.

thanks guys, agree about the texturing, unfortunately we ran out of time to keep working on it.
cybrain, we used cinema 4d (picked it up just for this job) and after effects for compositing. the trail effects were done with particular and displacement maps.

Those examples above are great. Kosinski (via KDLab) did some amazing stuff.
Also look at www.cgtalk.com.
If you aren't going to use GI for whatever reason (rendering time being one), then you need to learn how to use soft shadows to your best advantage. There are many old school tutorials how to do this (basically, you need a ton and to play with the attenuation settings).
2 weeks is fast. We typically take about 2 months to create a quality animation, although we have done a few that turned out really nice in about 2 weeks, but I also have a team working on them.
For textures, I'd buy them and build up a library fast. Took me years to build ours, but nowadays you can buy some pretty complete stuff for not too much.
Also, look at online render farms if you need the resources.
Nice stuff, though, just need to polish some of the edges.

online render farms. do you have any urls?

Those are the two I know of that have been around for ages.
Keep in mind that they are not 'cheap', but they are faaaast and for someone that doesn't want to buy and maintain a farm, it works out well.
You'll have to go through some tests, as you know there can be a billion problems, especially with GI and plugins, come render time.
They also have a subscription price that works out well - you can upload and test projects as much as you want.
