I want to upgrade the ram in my mb pro (1 gig to 3) before upgrading to Leopard; can you recommend a third party brand that won't crap out or catch fire?

Third party? I always recommend Kingston. But that's just me...

For a start you won't be able to put 3GB in, it has to be pairs.
For example, you've currently got 1GB which will be made up of 2 x 512mb.
You'll need 4GB total (or maybe 2GB if it's an old Macbook Pro). 4GB can be made up of 4 x 1GB or 2 x 2GB.
Have a look at www.crucial.com
They are pretty cheap. Never, ever buy RAM from Apple.
- Sorry, I just realised you are talking about a laptop...Raniator
- yeah, 3GB is do-able.Jaline
- yeah I have to double check, but I think mine has slots for up to 3gig, from what I read.more than 3 it can't use.i_monk
- Are you sure about that Raniator? I thought you just had to pair the RAM types -ie. the speed, not the actual size?detritus
- It's apparently "best" to pair them up this way, but some have done further tests and see no huge difference.Jaline
