I was telling a friend when the economy collapses, companies fire half their staff. When they get a big job and find themselves understaffed they bring in freelancers at 3 times the rate of the people they fired. Place your bets on this happening within the next three months.

don't sing it, bring it...

I don't think you've really thought this through very well. We'd ALL be freelancing then. Tons of available designers (supply) + few projects (demand) = working for crumbs and handjobs (If we're lucky! Which I tend to be. I better stock up on lubrication).
- shit! you can work for handjobs? fuck me!anxiousarms
- You mean we're actually supposed to make money doing this stuff?!?! I'm sitting here with a rubbed-raw peen and no $$.tommyo

Thankful to still be gainfully employed. Full time. Being a freelancer right now would set my teeth on edge. Respect to those who are toughing it out and making a living.

I have a friend who was a copywriter for warner music. After 9/11 they fired half their staff, then three months later asked her to come back. Because management declared a hiring freeze, her dept had to bring her back as a freelancer at double what she was making as an employee.
This is corporate logic.

Lol, bullshit. 9/11 is a very specific case... Freelance pay is definitely down right now and competition is high.

There may be some truth to this logic, but the type of freelance jobs that are going to open up are probably not very exciting. They will pay well though.
What's funny is that my freelance work has never been better lately, but I mostly work with independent professionals and small mom & pop type shops.

Sounds nice, but uhhhhhh... I'm thinking I'm going to wait just a little bit before starting my own design company... who knows though, maybe things have actually hit the floor (though I doubt it).
