Que onda my fellow QBNers.
I need some input from you guys.
What do you guys do when a friend or family member whats you to design something for them?
I have had some kinda mixed experiences with working for friends.
With friends I usually do the work and charge less for the work, if its directly for them... if its for a company they work for I dont really lower my cost.
My current situation is with an ex girlfriend, shes starting her career as a hair dresser and needs some business cards.
I have no problem doing the work but feel a little weird charging her...
what do you guys think?
Thanks in advance.

friends are different from family. At least charge her something.

If they want input, you charge them full price.
If they want it for free, you have total creative freedom.
No middle ground.

make an arrangement where you can have one more night with her...
just playing, if she is a good friend do the work for her to push her along in her new venture. Money isn't everything, it is just a business card. She could be asking for ecommerce solutions. The I would say fuck that!!!
- Thats what I'm thinking. + her design needs are not extreme.sofakingbanned

queonda ex novia design freebie...
Well is cool from her to ask about that but If she is used to ask free favors from you and you want her to stop, this is the time were you say No.
Sometimes freebies are more time consuming than actual paying job.
At least charge her something that fits in her budget...

I agree, try to avoid working for friends or family.
I can't charge close friends so what I do is have a Grey Goose bottle payment depending on the amount of work that is required.
This way I'm not asking them for cash, they don't mind picking up a few bottles for me, and drinking sessions at my place on Friday's don't cost me anything.
Everyone wins!

- I'm not suggesting you do that much work for friends!BannedKappa

I've learned this the hard way. Working for friends and/or family often ends in frustration, if it ends at all. Such jobs often get bogged down in indecision and lack of structure.
I've done a fair bit of free work for my church this year, and it's been extracted through the nose. Painfully and slowly. I had a conversation recently with a lady who works on church publications. She sharply disagreed with me when I told her that clip art is kitschy and banal in its insipid ubiquity, and that stock photography insults people with at least semi-functioning brains.

Especially avoid doing wedding invites for friends...
Can anyone say Bridezilla!!!

exchange the work for sex. Simple and easy.

don't even get me started on wedding invitations (for friends and family)

Cool thanks guys.
I will probably help her out since shes starting out and doesn't really have money, she wants to pay and I know she doesn't expect anything for free.
+ She has always been a nice girl and I was a total ass when we went out. I need to make nice guy points.

just tell her to ride the donkey.

No wonder you were banned, don't try and pull favours for ex's unless it results in free unemotionally attached sex or at least a handjob when you're 'designing' for her.
- sofakingbanned0
I don't need to do anything to get sex in return from my ex's
If you do the job right the first time, you'll always have return business hahaha. But yes I agree I shouldn't be doing favors for anyone.
Damn this loving heart of mine :(....- I did a free logo, bcard and stuff for an ex. I felt weird taking her money.epete22
- yea I just feel weird. + I don't think she has much money anyway... this is her "big move"sofakingbanned
