The Culture Jam Idea

So here is the idea:
Have a creative space that looks like a retail store, although when you get inside it's very minimal with hardwood floors, comfortable seating, and desks. As a creative person you could rent out a desk space for roughly $300 per month with month-to-month type leasing. You can work from 9 - 5, you just come in and be at your desk. Clients can come in, just like a shared space, with a small room for conferences that is closed off. The space would have art on the walls for a gallery type feel, where walk-in's are promoted. People could come in and chill, drink their coffee, do some work and chat for free. A spot for people to create, then desks for artists looking to build. If you don't like chatter, then don't work with us here.
Plenty of other idea's and revisions. But what you do you guys think? Definitely looking for other Chicago artists to help me execute the idea in the near future.

I should mention doing meet-ups and events here would be fun too.

Hahaha, yes. But no all actuality, just a free space for creatives. Skateparks for boarders...Culture Jams for creatives..

Do you want to destroy the world with this kind of hideous ideology? Sharing things and being 'creative'... BAH!
- inkpink0
someone started up one of these in vancouver a few years ago.
i don't get the "culture jam" reference.
- thepda0
Do you have any links? The Culture Jam reference is just a place for multiple types of people to be interacting with one another. Not the book reference.

i dunno, noone serious will go for this. if i want to work i don't want to pay 300$ for an office with kids skating around me and people dropping in to chat around me. i could do that with my laptop anywhere. rented studio space yes, skatepark / kids hang out yes, both in one area - no.
- i dunon why i say skatepark, brain fart, i just mean place for random people to come in when people are trying to work is a nonoHoax

@Hoax:
Good points for sure. I know for sure there would be rules. And the $300 is just a guesstimate. Don't really know if it would be that much. But your right that some people need closed space that is quiet. So, maybe if it had a think tank type of place too? So then if you needed to go private, you could.

i dunno, it seems like a cool idea and all, rented studio space, but i think getting a decent environment would be like throwing 100 sided dice or some equally suitable analogy. its a really cool idea mind you, if it was something you could set up with people you knew beforehand, like 10 friends, rent out a big office and set up what you mentioned but all work somewhat seperately on personal stuff, i think its a good idea.
seems like charging for it means you are looking at it from a business perspective? (could be wrong) but if its the case i dontt hink its gonna work

I don't think it would be a serious business venture, just something that everyone needed to chip into to pay the bills.
Mind you, I would be furnishing the entire place, meaning desks, seating, everything already done. Doing that alone is a big project, but I would finance it to try and get the ball rolling.
People are already doing it with friends and "shared spaces" are very popular already. But no shared space is dedicated to just doing that, they are usually companies who are loosing money and trying to get it back somehow. Then they give you ridiculous rules about renting a space there (like e-mail me when your going to come in -- well if I am paying $300 I don't think I should have to e-mail you)
Good points again though Hoax

i think its an idea and could work of course, and i think it'd be dope, you'd need a really good core group of people involved, otherwise it's worth a crack, what's the worst that could go wrong?
- thepda0
@Hoax
No worries bruddah, your not sounding like a d-bag... Your bringing up some very good points!! I asked for people's opinions, so bring em! Haha!
Your so right on the money with this "you'd need a really good core group of people involved" -- I do need people involved, so I am searching for some Chicago creatives looking to possibly help the venture get started (not money, just people to get involved)

how about Culture Club?

i looked into this a few months back.
it sounds incredibly metro and cool,
but the whole thing just brings out the trashiest people who are there because they couldn't find a real job, or couldn't afford a real office.
