work. Any commentary on the Current state of Design and Advertising. i feel like print is dead and UI is king, for now anyways. I am sure I have missed any other posts but I am curious about goings on beyond my mind's wall.
Anybody else offered McWages? years of experience washed away.

Print, broadcast, interactive...I think all of these will soon be one cohesive medium. Technology changes everyday. Interactive is expanding rilly fast. UI doesn't even touch the face of it and is such a broad topic.
RIght now I think these things are what's already here or what's upcoming. The next big boom so to speak:
- Mobile (Been here but will be exploding very soon. I'm talking more than just iPhone apps).
- Augmented Reality (With all the new motion capture shit going on, I think this tech will be getting REAL popular really soon. I can see this technology getting integrated with broadcast too)
- Interactive TV (Just starting to get here. This is where I believe everything will be soon. Lazy folks like me would rather be on a couch watching TV than in an office chair in front of a computer monitor. I can see mobile and augmented reality being a big part of this as well).I think designers need to know more about dev and technology and vice versa for dev's. If you can't hang, expect to get paid McWages. Gotta stay current or die.

I expected "or give me death," this is a bunch of pussying around.

Stay Current. good point. The Landscape is changing. I feel like I missed something while I was employed. Got too Comfortable. Thanks for your great Feedback. I was meaning Interactive based design. Haha, another sign I need to be more up to date. on my lingo.

...and I wanted to give letterpress a try :o(

you need to have a foundation before you can build a house... given that there will be different kinds of challenges using web/interactive... its still the same basic ideas...

haha nice one. I am on the edges or in the middle onto the next great thing. Love it. thnx for the kick.

I hate to bring the debate, but I get a bit discouraged when I hear comments like "xxxx is dead" or "xxxx is the ipod killer" thrown out just to bring controversy.
For as long humans keep buying any kind of goods that need to be packaged (from toilet paper to electronics) print can't be dead.
There will always be a need to develop the branding experience that comes with a label or package identifying a product.
The only time the print industry can be dead is if for some apocalyptic reason, all brands of all kinds conglomerated into a single identity and there was no need to identify product A from product B. And I don't think that would happen in our lifetime.
Print has taken a secondary place to interactive mediums (and I hate to use that term, because print mediums can be interactive too), I can agree with that, but to say that the entire medium is dead.. well.. is clearly dramatic, don't you think?
- <<monospaced
- it's dramatic enough if you count the jobs lostPupsipu
- jobs lost everywhere pupsipu, print isnt dying, well said meeklojimzyk

print is the future
- Pupsipu0
yea print is the future, when screens are as small and as flexible as papers and interactive, but everything will look more printy on them.
but after that we'll just use some brain augmentation, shoot signals straight into visual cortex, not through the eyes.

Print isn't dying, it's just changing. Sure, things like newspapers, CDs, annual reports, and magazines aren't the cash cows they once were, but people are still producing plenty of books, be it prose or pictures; bands still need posters; and companies need identities that work across multiple platforms. I don't see how the web medium will ever replace the more personal experience of holding and reading a printed piece. A central aspect of human nature is the need for touch, and the computer doesn't fulfill that.
- I agree.monospaced
- monospace, get your hands out of your pants and use your brain for once in your lifeepikore

- oh, i'm boredepikore
- I think it's better to agree with Scotch_Roman than to just repeat it. He's usually spot on.monospaced
- paper needs trees, it's not worth cutting down trees so you can hold something and have an experiencePupsipu

David Carson called this one long ago with his groundbreaking book, "Print Is For Losers."

...give me design? - well, surely we are all surrounded by design? from the beds we sleep in, the coffee mugs we drink out of, the pavements that we walk on! - good or bad everything has been designed to serve a purpose. would you not say that cave paintings are just primitive info devices? manuscripts? everywhere we look there is design. in every format and discipline - it's all design based. we all wear clothes, we all wear shoes, we all take in vast amounts of engineered information every moment of every day.
agreed there is some serious sh*te knocking around but that is the way it goes - the less well designed stuff makes the good stuff look great.
i know that the current economic situation is leaving some people out on their ass - but surely if you love what you do - why worry! if you are good enough you will always get good gigs - if you aren't good enough, well maybe you shouldn't playing the game?
we all have a "what's the point moment" but if you are truly dedicated, and even if you weren't employed to do it, you'd do it as a hobby, well then let the world see what you can do.
sorry for a long winded rant - but surely the whole question is more about creating nice, fresh and original ideas executed with that little bit of something special?
- twokids0
*yawn* what was that? sorry fell off for a bit of a nap.
- Pupsipu0
wow that's way more interesting than any bullshit done by designers. Just need to take better photos of it to show off on the amazing new internet.
- refunktion0
Are we being interactive right now?
