okay so the time has come to get a new computer, here is my thinking so far but it would really help to get some of your educated thoughts on this before i spend my life away on this.
i still have my powerbook g4 in working form but it is really chugging along i cannot use cs4 on it or upgrade the ram, already tried and it freaked out, so my one thought is just keep this running for lazy email and internet use when i want to sit on the couch and get a desktop since i don't really need to be mobile anymore.
i will be using it for mostly print, interactive, and some after effects. is there really any need for a laptop anymore? this will be the second computer i have bought and i knew what i wanted before, now not so much.

if you don't need to be mobile anymore, why not get a nice imac with a huge screen. can get a 24" screen (print at 100%, no zooming for you!) for the same money as the laptop, and higher performance to boot. and they look pretty and take up very little space.

yea that is what i am thinking and i took really good care of my g4 which if i ever needed to present i could still transfer pdfs and what not.

crayz has a good point, unless you are going to drop the money to load out the Ram on a mac pro it is just going to run sluggish, i think the recommended ram is at least 8G. vs 4G for the mac book pro.

so would a imac be a better choice over a macbook pro if i don't mind not being mobile?
- i have a macpro. and a macbook. and my macbook battery died. and i didn't think i'd miss being able to take my laptop places. you never know when you mite need to uproot.crayz
- but i do. Computers my not have thoughts. but i think my macpro mate have had feelings.crayz
- Ahh. macbook and mite**** corrections .crayz

My feelings about the iMac is that I rather go with a laptop because the laptop is portable. If you're doing video, go for a basic mac pro and buy your own ram and HDs. Don't forget a decent video card or dedicated video on laptops. Integrated video uses up your RAM.
- I forgot about not being able to switch batteries on the new laptops which kinda sucks.kgvs72
- oh seriously?nicole_marie
- I just check Apple.com all have built in batteries.kgvs72

Aftereffects on a laptop can be slow.... try hanging out with somebody who has a quad-core running aftereffects and you'll see the difference.
- AE on my MBP runs great.harlequino
- i have a mbp and its not that much nicer. but im not a heavy user. so i could be wrong.crayz

thanks guys I will have to give this some more thought but you all have really given me great suggestions and points in which i need to consider.

Get a 15" MBP... they have dedicated a dedicated video card which really eases up processor resources. It sucks about the battery, but apparently they last awhile anyways.

Get a desktop, you'll get more bang for the buck. And you can also get a usb drive to transfer files to your laptop if you end up getting a apple desktop. I prefer pc desktops as they are faster.

I would go with a desktop for the longevity since you mentioned you have a laptop already. I would also get some remote access software for your laptop so you can be out and about and still be able to grab files from your desktop
