Just because I work with a computer, people assume I will make the best possible decision for their next tech purchase. They are right. I enjoy reading reviews of new tech, trying to figure out when the best time to buy is, etc. But these days, I don't know why, but I couldn't care less.
I have to suggest a netbook/notebook/laptop that can do whatever non-graphics and non-gamers use their shit for, at a reasonable speed, and also have the capability to burn CDs and possibly DVDs (but not important.)
From the ten minutes I've looked online, it seems like the best price vs. overall usability balance would be to buy a decent netbook and an external cd-r/dvd-r drive.
If you guys use, or know of someone with this set-up, what do you think about it?
Or, am I wrong, and why? Should I just suggest a non-netbook?

You're going to have a problem finding a reasonably priced Netbook that has good processor power, RAM, AND a CD drive.
It's a Netbook, not a CDbook. Get a cheap $200-250 Netbook with the external drive. Asus has several that I've played with that are quite nice.
- That being said, for another $200-300 you can just get a fully capable laptop from Dell.dMullins
