I've been in Denver for 7 months now, so I don't know everything. But a fresh perspective on the things I know of so far...
Awesome:
The weather - sunny and warm all the time.
People - generally pretty laid back. Not many pretentious types.
Proximity to mountains is great
Lots of Mexican food
Lots of good beerSucks:
It's a bit dry and brown
Distance from the rest of AmericaSome of the bigger streets like Colfax and Broadway are kind of awesome and suck at the same time. A bit run down with some sleazy people, but also up-and-coming with some of the better establishments. I suggest being fairly close to those kinds of areas but not right on them.
I'm between Capitol Hill and Wash Park, which I like a lot. Broadway has good stuff (Sputnik, Hi-Dive, Mayan Theatre, vintage furniture shops, etc). If you bike, there's a great trail along Cherry Creek/Speer Blvd that takes you downtown in one direction and in the other direction you can go to the yuppie Cherry Creek shopping area. There are other good areas too, but this is what I know. 17th Ave (2 blks north of Colfax) also has a lot of good eats.
Boulder is half an hour away. There's a lot of good food, bars, design, and hiking there. But also a lot of pretentious hippies. I like going there once in a while but prefer living in Denver.
- awesome, thanks!refunktion
- WTF? Sunny and Warm all the time? Did you sleep through winter or something?mg33
- summed up nicely.designisfine
- Compared to Wisconsin's winter (where I came from), HELL YES it's sunny and warm all the time!joeth

The city of Denver made all pit bull owners licence their dogs, shortly following they went to everyone's home who had a licensed pit bull and executed their dog.
Not a big fan of Denver after that.- serious? I know about the pit bull ban, but do you have a link or something?refunktion

So i have been here almost a year. It is cool so far, working at Factory has been an interesting ride for sure.
The mountains are great in the summer and winter, but the traffic is just absurd. I think for the type of music im interested in, Denver lacks quite a bit... but I might be able to look past it once i get some more pieces for my studio.

5 Points is getting better, but still an odd feeling place. There are 750k townhomes sitting next to homeless people (doesn't help the central homeless area is blocks away)....so it is all in process. This economy has slowed things, too. I've seen some nice townhomes go at close to the developer's cost (still ain't cheap, but probably 30% less than 2 years ago).
If you got cash for mid end, you can negotiate some good deals.About time for a Denver Drinks?

For those that care, I live in Denver now. Went to Vine Street Pub the other night... aside from the wait, i love it. Had some beer at Great Divide Brewery and The Lobby too.

Don't overlook West Highland - 32nd and Lowell. Some good little restaurants (Meade Street is a great place for food and beer) without the hassles of downtown parking.
I agree about the brown, coming from the east coast I still have a hard time with no water and no green.
A lot depends on what you are looking for. I like Pasquini's, Duo, Root Down, Forest Room 5, Vita and a few others in the Highland area for good food (and it is only blocks from me).
Some good deals out there if you are looking to buy. Let me know if you are.
Welcome!

seriously, I moved out in '96. Last time I was back was in 2000. Things had changed a lot since then. I lived in a bunch of places near capitol hill. Cool neighborhood. Last place I lived was across Colfax in 5 Points. Has that place been gentrified yet?
Oh I once was shot at 3 times on Colfax in the middle of the day right next to the police station and that huge beer store, Argonauts.
I thought someone was lighting firecrackers until we pulled into the parking lot to get some beer and saw all these silver dented holes in the side of our Trooper.

Denver's a really great place between coasts. The contrast of the Rockies next to the vast flatness of the great plains makes for some beautiful views. I lived there off and on for 7 years. You are from SF, so the long commute to the mountains won't annoy you too much. If you like snowboarding that much, try to build your schedule around never going on the weekend. It's a nightmare. Passes are REALLY cheap compared to the Sierra spots. $500 for a 5 mountain season pass.
Hard to give other advice without knowing anything about you. The highlands area is my favorite. It's full of yuppies, but the location to access everything easily is worth it. It'll also keep you off the cramped highways. Cap Hill is a good spot too. Streets of London, Benders, Bar bar, Illegal Pete's and 3 Kings Tavern are good swilling spots.
Also, make sure to take some trips to the four corners area during the winter or summer if you can get over Wolf Creek Pass. Many hidden gems there.
