I don't want to be an art director any more. I no longer get the satisfaction I used to from this industry and am quite miserable most of the time. The thing is, I'm too scared to pursue something outside of my little comfortable design/advertising bubble. It pays the bills.
Anyone else ever quit one industry and go into another?
Nothin' like getting all deep on a Tuesday morn ;)

There are a lot of other things you can do with your life. However you may begin to feel the same way about that new industry as well.
I empathize with your feelings. I have felt that way before. To overcome this I focus on my personal work to fill the void left sometimes by working commercially.

I used to work in stores or restaurants while working in design,
the worst choice I ever made was to go fulltime,
I gained 15 pounds, don't exercise anymore and rarely meet new people outside of my work circle,
pros: I'm sitting all day long browsing the internet,
cons: I'm sitting all day long browsing the internet,- So you're a full time web surfing loser now?kalkal
- yep pretty much :(

Oh boy, your getting down in the dumps... is it still because of this project?

Can you move up to something more exciting? Sideways to something else within the same field?
What do you do for hobbies?

^ this. I always feel that when the commercial work is lacking, I look to other creative outlets (music, photography, whatever) to get re-inspired. If your day to day is lacking, then go somewhere else, change it. Or go out on your own and only do work that you want to do. Take a risk.

Best job I ever had was working in a greenhouse. Watered flowers for 6+ hours a day. Then when I wasn't doing that I was seeding flats and hauling them for storage. It was hot, it was dirty, I had to be up at the ass-crack of dawn but it was the best damn job I ever had.

ethanfink - that's just one of a string of unfulfilling projects over the years. It's just lately I'm asking myself what am I doing in an industry that gives me anxiety 80% of the time.

Don't look for everything from your work.

Blaze your own trail adriansnyder7.
Fortune favours the bold... A life not lived taking risks is a life not lived...
Personally, The Mrs. & I are strarting an Design & Art focused company and getting out of Toronto, ON to pursue smaller clients who require us rather than keep working for big cunt agencies/clients who never know our name...
Our goal is to level out the playing field for anyone/everyone and take some power out of the city/cities...
Dream big, plan bigger and fucking reach for the skies buddy... Lots to be done that hasn't already...

It's not about finding another industry; the grass isn't greener on the other side...
Fine your true place in your own industry or a comparable industry as I am trying to do, mentioned in my post 2 above...
The worst you can do is solidify a routine, become complacent and simply deal with the way things are because it is convenient to do so... This is what sheep do and QBN'ers are the furthest thing from...

You can offer a whole lot moving to another industry and giving it a whole new perspective. It's been doing quite often in history and great results have come out of them.
If you're miserable now, think about living like that for the rest of your life. It's gonna suck. I say prepare and plan to leave in the best way possible. Once you do that, you'll be ready to go.

Thanks for the positive spin on things guys! Hopefully some exciting times are ahead.
- Just make changes sooner rather than later; avoiding change will only put you in deeper rut homey...ideaist
- having a plan (outside of work!) is a great feeling! especially when the first step of it occurs!ideaist
- it then starts to feel very "real" and a sense of satisfaction results... 1 change leads to various... it's an addiction...ideaist
- Let's rephrase your sentence to "Exciting times are ahead"... ; )ideaist
- Haha, good call ideaist! Thanks!adriansnyder7

Years ago.... I had fun at unpretentious jobs like pizza delivery and driving a cab in a college town for a while.... I had other gigs programming for engineering projects.... waay more prestige but waaay more stress....
One massively important thing.... ask yourself what precisely is driving you crazy, it may be more due to your co-workers and/or the business clients you have now rather than the work itself....
I've noticed that working for companies who are desperate for clients is alot more stressful than working for companies that are not desperate...

creativity (problem solving) and the ability to design (planning) and art direct (lead a team) will carry over well into just about any field you could get yourself into
