Jaron Lanier on this. Best thing I've read:
" To me, that's crazy, because we don't know what the goal is. We don't know what the scale of achieving the goal would be... So to say, "Well, just because I'm accelerating, I know I'll reach my goal soon," is absurd if you don't know the basic geography which you're traversing. As impressive as your acceleration might be, reality can also be impressive in the obstacles and the challenges it puts up. We just have no idea."

So if Google becomes God, does that make Android the savior and Steve Jobs the once allied now cast-off Lucifer?

Okay, I'm being a little bit alarmist:
Basically, prediction is an expensive thing. It requires complex algorithms and generally, the algorithms don't scale well.
Things like recommendation engines, generally only exist on the largest of ecommerce sites. Only super large organisations like banks use prediction engines to recognise potential fraud.
But... now, Google have decided to release an API, which will potentially allow anyone to make use of prediction engines in their own projects.
Why would Google do this? Well, imo - it's probably a way that they can test out their algorithms. They get a lot of eager developers to put their code through training - and they get an indication of how successful it is -> allowing them to iteratively improve what they have.
Not quite the singularity yet - but, it's another step towards SkyNet and the domination of machine over man. Perhaps...?
- you know that everytime they release something, that means they already got a better enginegeorgesIII
