Now can we get back to talking about the scourge that is crushed blacks?

Shooting at 24fps with a 180' shutter angle is the same as 48fps at 360' angle. They both expose the film for 1/48th of a second, the main difference is that at 24fps you "blank out" for 1/48th between frames... the motion blur is the same however, you just get "all" the frames instead of 1 out of 2.
That being said, projectors in cinemas are usually projecting at 48fps, pulled up from the original 24fps stock... so don't worry about the look of this one, if anything, it's going to be Peter Jackson's aesthetic choices that will make this ugly and not the technology.

^ my LED TV hasn't got 3D :(
agree though - Avatar worked well but I like a plain old flat film me.

I read somewhere that the Hobbit can still be viewed in 24fps, so this may not even be that big of a deal. I dont know how it all works, I just know about the effect that all these people are describing when they saw it.
I know a lot of people do like all this 3D super smooth motion stuff, Avatar really got this kicked off, and you cant even buy an LED TV that doesnt have 3D built into it, so I know it's not going away and what I personally think about it is irrelevant, but I still just like good old fashioned movies that look normal. No 3D (I get dizzy from it), and no motion flow.
- fucking hate this 3D thing.....even if it is part of my job for more than 10 years.ApeRobot

yup, left image+right image = 2 images, 24fps*2images... BUT THIS WILL LOOK LIKE SHIT!

The frames rate reduce motion blur. Witch is some sort of "in your face " 3D effect killer.
It is supposed to make it more comfortable for the eyes watching stereoscopic movies.

well some video games are 60
- Quite different though with games to live action films.CygnusZero4

they want to make it 48fps. facepalm

Even if it's shot that way, it still has to be displayed that way. And current theatres aren't set up to display at that frame rate. Avatar didn't look like a soap opera in the theatres. Just on new, state of he art hd tvs. Which is what I'm guessing he demonstrated his Hobbit footage with.

I spent a while testing many blurays on it using the TrueMotion setting, literally like 2 weeks, and I never got used to it. It just looked weird to me all the time. Every time the camera panned or there was some fast action on the screen, it almost looked like that weird pan and scan effect. It so clearly looks processed when the framerate gets too high.
I have a feeling that Jackson had spent so long testing this and shooting the film that he's so used to it now, but I hope he is isn't surprised people are reacting negatively to it. You can't expect someone to just like this effect or force themselves to get used to something that doesn't look good to them.
Even if more directors do this, there will always be those traditional guys like Chris Nolan or the Coen brothers who will never use this. Like I said with the album/cassette comparison, they still make vinyls because there are so many people that still love it. 24fps films are never going away, thank god.
- Im starting to look at Jackson as a technology whore like Lucas and Cameron. Just shoehorn all the latest shit in.CygnusZero4
- Sorry I said TrueMotion, on the Sony its called MotionFlow.CygnusZero4

I definitely have seen this effect up close on many films. It's hard to explain if u haven't, but it's very noticible and does affect how you may feel about what you are watching. I called it the 'novella' look. When I saw Avatar in the novella look, I couldn't believe it. It looked like it was being broadcast live from central park. But one thing is for sure, you get used to it. The more you watch like that, the less jolting it gets.

I LOVE SOAP OPERAS!!! SO THERE!
- CygnusZero40
You dont need to watch a 2 hour movie to know what the soap opera effect is when the frame rate is too high.
I have TrueMotion on my Sony TV, I turned it off immediately because it looks ridiculous. Ive not read 1 report from CinemaCon that said it looks great.
Im sure the movie itself will be good, but how it looks, totally different story.
- i'll watch a ripped 720 before it's released anyway. so will most viewers.sine
- climbatree0
fuck, watch it when it comes out judge it for yourself then FUCK UP!
I mean really. 'that thing i haven't see sucks' hmm really? your that guy?

This is not like switching from bw to color tvs, which everyone saw as a great improvement. I watched a documentary on it. This is more like switchIng from albums to cassettes. Ppl who loved albums did not like what they perceived as a sound difference.
So basically george lucas shoots new star wars movies digitally with advanced chi effects = garbage
James cameron shoots avatar with improved 3d effects = garbage
Peter jackson shoots hobbit in 48fps = garbage
Chris nolan shoots dark knight on film with practical effects and 24fps = highest rated superhero movie of all time?
*sings* which of these things is not like the other
- avatar and new star wars = shitty script and acting and directing. dark knight = good acting and script.monospaced
- almost nothing to do with special effectsmonospaced
- I wouldn't call Dark Knight a great script... the last 20 minutes could have been cut, no need for dent to go crazy, etc.zarkonite
- and the new star wars looked like shit cuz they were shot like shit, I could do better with an 8mm cam.zarkonite
- umm dark knight had a ton of fx in itrobotinc

Plenty of time for post processing of the footage. Plus, not every theatre is going to dish out the cash for the projection equipment, so I suspect it will more akin to seeing an IMAX version (ie select screens) and there will be a "standard" version for less state-of-the-art projection equipment.

can you believe how stupid all these color tv shows look? things were fine in black & white. besides, the color looks fake.
- <Gucci
- Not the same geniusCygnusZero4
- Fyi ppl loved color when it came out. Noone loves the soap opera effect. Jackson = cameron = lucasCygnusZero4
- that'll be your secret. color tech took over 15yrs to make it into homes when people were comparatively richalbums
- you miss the point that people like yourselves are resistant to change because it takes you from your comfort zone.albums

Yup 48fps looks like soap opera TV. Apparently it benefits 3D, which I couldn't care less about. A real shame.
Jackson is like Lucas - successful kids with healthy egos eager to run amok on the latest film tech, regardless if it's tasteful or not.
- CygnusZero40
Yeah I read that yesterday. Dope is just like James Cameron, has to shoehorn every single latest technology into everything he works on.
It was fine with LOTR because all he could do was a ton of CGI stuff then, well now he can actually shoot in 48fps rather than 24, the way they've been shooting films for 80 years, so it has this ultra smooth look that is very strange.
If anyone here has ever seen a 120hz that has a true motion option, then they know what this looks like. It's called the soap opera effect and has a really weird over processed look to it. I've seen multiple sites that were at CinemaCon complain about how it looked. Nice job Peter.
- *seen a 120hz LED TV, I meantCygnusZero4
- I hate that tru motion shit.. makes every movie look a broadcast TV show. GARBAGEbogue
