Is there anything stopping an individual buying a .co name of another business name- eg www.apple.co? Do companies have any right to a domain name using their business name? E.g. could the Apple lawyers reclaim said domain from an individual who purchased it?

It depends on whose lawyer-fu is greater. If the contents of the sites are at all similar, then Apple would win easily.

You'd have to have a good business case within that geographic domain* to maintain ownership.
* When you just say 'co', you mean that? Because that would imply a country-by-country basis, where there would be little in terms of international standardisation or aribitration.
Regardless, there's likely nothing to stop you buying someone else's domain in the first place, and as long as you'd be willing to settle for a 'fair' amount, little they could do to screw you over in any fundamental sense, after the event.

I'm glad they are releasing .co domains. Its a good domain and should help free up some nice domain opportunities.
Bring on the .uk damn it.
