I'd recommend starting with mushy then phasing yourself onto garden.

I think your best solution is to draw a grid yourself with already angled guides that you can move around. don't think there's an easy out of the box solution in Illustrator.
The right tool would probably be CAD.

"and Illustrator can't render shadows"
?
gradient, opacity mask, multiply effect.
maybe it just need a bit of effort...- It can't cast shadows from one object onto another, I mean. Obviously it can be illustrated.monospaced

It's not that difficult, I do it all the time for various jobs. I basically choose my angle, copy and flip the line and viola, you've got all you need to build your drawing. Circles and curves work similarly. Email me if you have any questions, or just throw the work my way :)

I just did a project where I laid out a geographic area with simple architectural elements in sketchup. then exported a jpeg and traced the view that I wanted.
Sketchup is free but if you get the PRO version you can export a vector format instantly.

fairly easy with an isometric grid

Why this place is so full of idiots that prefer behave like children instead of trying to help?

if this is for a class, its not dumb. its actually so much easier in illustrator. be glad you're not doing it on tracing paper with a T-square and triangles. so quit your whining and do your work.
man, ive changed so much since i started teaching. i sound like a grumpy old man.
seriously, these are basic drawing skills. learn it.
