I've got some text which doesn't have light version of the font and need to make the text thinner.
I can do it in freehand, but is there a way of doing this in illustrator?

Just so you know it's a terrible thing to do to a font as you ruin the balance of thicks to thins, ink traps become exaggerated etc.
If you absolutely, positively have to kill the font this way you can add a stroke, expand and delete the unnecessary outlines.
- +1 don't do it! or redraw the characters you need if you know what you're doingBaskerviIle

Don't use that font, or don't use as much copy. Those are your options.

I think you should take the time to redraw the font. I'm sure the client will wait.
