Love the sail and the knocked out script, but the wordmark just looks hokey. The aesthetic that works for Arabic writing does not look professional when brought to Latin lettering, in my opinion.

Not at all, but there are complementary Latin typefaces for Arabic-primary brands.

“Our Identity
We are proud of our Islamic heritage. Of Sheikh Zayed’s legacy. Our identity should reflect this. To that end we propose a design which combines Islamic tradition with contemporary design based on an Arabic calligraphy of Abu Dhabi. It's a fine line I guess. I don't think the mark would do much without some sort of arabic influenced typeface. It looks a bit Ali Baba to my Western eyes but I'm sure that is me being a heathen. It's starting to grate on me seeing lines of copy on the site visuals set in it.

I was reading their press release and was surprised to find the word 'future' there. WTF is future about this? This ID to me, has a back to roots feel, the extremely expected colors, travel agent photography, etc. don't represent at all Abu Dhabi's luxury, money and power we all keep hearing and reading about.

The guitar pick intersecting with the wordmark a bit feels tightwad

I work with Arabic and English and do a lot of re-branding both ways, but the type in Arabised Latin in this logo is pants. I absolutely hate it when people try to add a very oriental script-style to the latin and think it would work. It has absolutely no base in traditional calligraphy (khatt) to give it that Islamic look. Maybe inspiration from modern Islamic calligraphers (e.g. Mounir Shaarani), or those who practice free scripts, would have been better.
Also the random usage of diacritic dots simply don't add any value and the type would work perfectly well without. Also the legibility of the text is very questionable, to English readers.
Pseudo Arabic fonts: They are considered to be the 'Comic Sans' of Arabic type design. It is too similar to these and should have been avoided in my opinion:
