Review of the new sony NEX 5N. Very positive review, high iso is excellent, comparable to a 5D MKII apparently. Color rendition, sharpness, all looks good. and with sony set to release an affordable 50mm 1.8 for nex, its looking like a nice system.
Video quality is looking good, not Lumix GH2 good, but the resolution of the GH2 makes even the canons look bad.
And best of all, sony have finally made a nex camera with an attachable electronic viewfinder, and the viewfinder is amazing according to reviews, high quality electronic view finder you can get.
bit funny looking, but its pictures are great and its very compact.

The Leica's nice but I liked the GRD3 for that type of camera.
Cameras are a nightmare really. I like compact, then I decide I'll fork out and get something a bit better spec wise, more manual etc. Then m4/3 and talk myself up - GH2 for eg, then I think well I could get a 600d for that. Damn it. I think dslr is too much for what I want though. M4/3 / fixed is best.
Low light / fast AF / discreet.

- I have this camera and I LOVE it.monkeyshine
- Its a great camera, but save yourself lots of money and get a lumix LX5, they are identical.Hombre_Lobo

In terms of design I thought the X100 looked like bullshit retro from the off, the back is a real design mess.I've been using my refurb Sony NEX (£190 from eBay) for street but found that the Zuiko lens I got, being an old SLR thing, is just waaay big. Too conspicuous and heavy and such.
So just bit the bullet and bought myself a Voigtlander Color-Skopar (35mm) from CameraQuest plus an adapter from eBay and away I go! The lens is tiny and dark (the 'C' model: not the other variants, which have shiny bits), hopefully as discrete as it gets.
No auto-focus, but the swivel screen is useful for street/candid.

Bonsoir
Yes the x100 surprised me too, the feel [and look] of it, I dislike both, but low light its excellent. Most of my photos are quick / street / snap type. If there is an EVF I'd use it sometimes but wouldn't miss it 100% if it weren't there.
One thing that is important is that the camera is discreet. I wonder whether the GH2 is a little too large for street work.
Is the AF on GH2 not the same as G3?

@atkinson
hello again :)
the x100 is horrible to me, had a play a while ago and it certainly doesnt feel quality, buttons feel cheap, doesnt even do video.
The e-pl2 to me is fantastic, design wise and performance, its a shame about the weird light sensor issue, which is strange because the e-pl1 doesnt suffer, but the output from both is identical and iirc they use the same sensor.
The G3 is nice, newer sensor than all the lumix cameras, high iso is said to be better than all other lumix m43 cams, its only a tiny bit better than the GH2 though, but the ergonomics aren't very nice at all. I wouldnt say i have large hands, but its too small for comfort. The G2 and GH2 however feel great.
I'd go with the GH2, amazing performance (40 stills a second at 4megapixel, crazy fast focusing, and video quality that's significantly better than the canon 5D (in terms of sharpness and detail).
- ^yeh the E-p3 does look ace, but very expensive considering its the same sensor as its predecessors.Hombre_Lobo

So im back here again! GF3 is out the question for various reasons. Ep3 and epl3 and epm1 aren't what I'd hoped I don't think. I almost convinced myself into getting the x100 but low light next to epl2 are similar enough not to. So epl2 was the winner except for the crazy light patterns it makes, which IMO makes it kind of useless. So, G3 is looking best. Not tried it yet. Is it as ugly to use as it is to look at? Looks a little like a kids dslr?
- Atkinson0
@Hombre_Lobo Are they meant to have interchangeable lenses?
Would seem a strange move otherwise with the xz1 - unless its an update to the xz1?- yeh its interchangeable. it would be silly otherwise as you say :)Hombre_Lobo

- saw rumours about this too.

^its just a shame the nex doesn't have an additional attachable electronic view finder.
And of course the nex lenses will always be heavier because of the larger sensor, which causes the wider diameter of the lenses.
When is canon or nikon gonna jump in and make a mirrorless APS-C sensor camera eh? they'd get it right.
- re canon/nikon - no kidding, eh? i know they both have the entry level SLR market saturated, but...adumbratesly
- is that sarcasm or not lol? :P
on one hand they have excellent DSLRs and its working for them, but...Hombre_Lobo - on the other hand semi-pro lens changeable compacts are starting to take a lot market share.Hombre_Lobo

New firmware for the Sony nex series has this awesome feature -
I'm very impressed.
I am a big fan of the nex series. In cam HDR (takes 3 shots v v quickly), iso stacking for iso 12800 with little noise. And such a good sensor, plus it has all the DOF a standard crop sensor DSLR has, something a m43 cam will always struggle to get. Its just a shame the kit lens are slightly soft.

- Awwww thanks :D
looking good dude! Nice shots, last one is ace. Those blacks are getting crushed!! (not racist)Hombre_Lobo - Disclaimer: I'm viewing these pics on a phone in a pitch black room, so they might not have crushed blacks, just low screen gamma!Hombre_Lobo

I love the shape and feel of the Ricoh range.
haven't used the GR3 though.
I dont think the quality is anywhere near what Panasonic's G range are putting out.

I'm with you Atkinson. I'm holding out for the release of the GF3 too.
I saw and fiddled with a G3 in the flesh at the weekend and although amazed by it, it's still not a "compact" camera for me and that's what i'm after.
Current cam is a ricoh GX100 which's lens zips into the camera so very pocketable. Or with my wide lens convertor on it (which is always on it) its not pocketable, but small-bagable lol.
I think the GF3 with pancake would make a delightfully pocketable high quality camera and with the other lenses "small-bagable".
- Atkinson0
that g3 looks a tempting beast
- sorry, GF3 I meant - I want to try oneAtkinson
- yeh looks v small for a quality cam.Hombre_Lobo

my next big camera purchase should have the functionality of an iphone.
Shoot>manipulate>upload all in-camera.

- Cool!
ive got the 20mm and love it. rarely leaves the camera.Hombre_Lobo - yeah, think that is going to be the same with me ;)fodcj
- Cool!

^no way man!!
I cant wait to get a hold of one and see how small it is compared to the older G2 / G1 / G10.I've not seen any in the midlands yet, post some picture of the camera and pictures form the camera! GO GO GO!
We just pana or olympus to release a 40mm 1.8 lens now (to match the standard 50mm f1.8 on DSLR's) and its all good :)
- I thought the 20mm lens on 4/3 cameras corresponds to 40mm on full frame DSLRs...?left_right_out
- it does but i was referring to crop sensors. 50 = 80 on crop, so on m43 - 40 = 80 :)Hombre_Lobo

So finally got a chance to go a test a number of the recommended cameras and decided on the:
Panasonic Lumix G3 Body
Panasonic 20mm Pancake F1.7 lens.Got it about an hour ago so haven't played with it yet but am well pleased. Spent more that I was originally planning but hopefully will be worth it :)
- very niiiiiice. saw one in the flesh on sunday :) nice camera im thinking about it too!microkorg

I have a g10 a SLR and a s95, I dont really use the g10 much since I got the s95 because it just isnt as portable.
Its either a pocket camera or SLR for me, and the g10 was just a little to in between.
It does take fantastic photos though.- yeh man, thats it, it needs to be pocketable sometimes!
also the s95 has a f2 aperture vs the f2.8 of the g10! great!Hombre_Lobo - I have a G10 too. It is a great camera but, as you say, it's in between sizes. Thinking of going back to an SLRgoldieboy
